Babby: We're trying to build a culture brick-by-brick

The Phoenix Suns are one of the NBA's most successful franchises, posting a 1,965-1,554 record across nearly 44 seasons and only missing the playoffs 14 times.

However, they've never won an NBA Championship, and they don't appear to be anywhere close to that elusive first title this season.

Still, it should come as no surprise that the culture around the organization is something that is important to President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby as he and the team moves into an uncertain future.

"What we're always striving for is 'elite' status, and that means the ability to regularly, legitimately compete for championships," Babby told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Wednesday. "That doesn't mean you're going to win them every year, but that has to be our aspiration."

Babby admitted the team is in transition right now, at the beginning of a rebuilding process. The goal, he said, is to get back to the top of the NBA as quickly as possible while still being competitive.

That's part of the reason the Suns have been reluctant to "tear it all down" as some have suggested, instead choosing to rebuild on the fly. The plan is to sign key free agents as well as have productive drafts.

"We've begun to take steps," Babby said. "Some of them are small -- creating an environment where we know that players will want to come here and doing things that makes this the most player-friendly environment it can be."

Babby also talked about maintaining flexibility so that the Suns can take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

That means, essentially, the team will not sign players to outlandish contracts just to say they spent their cap space. That was an issue last summer, and the contracts given out are not helping the team's salary situation.

"I don't want to create some expectation that we're going to spend all of our money in 2012 because we have it," Babby said, noting the cap space could be used for trades. "We've got to stay disciplined and make sure that we make the right decision."

No matter how they do it, at the end of the day it's all about making Phoenix a place where excellence can be achieved.

"What we're trying to do is build, brick-by-brick, a culture that reflects sustained success," Babby said.

Time will tell if those first bricks have already been laid.

  • Bricks huh?

The only bricks I see are the ones the Suns are throwing up at the hoop. Seriously Lon, adding brick by brick is ok if the rest of the house wasn't falling apart. Brick by brick means things are going upward, you actually see us getting better? Are you blind man? This is one of the worst Suns teams in history. They don't have an offense, they don't play defense, they're horrible. Yeah Nash is doing his thing, Gortat too but thats it. We have no offensive threat to speak of, nothing that instills fear into the opposing teams. Those are some pretty crappy bricks.

  • "The plan is to sign key free agents"....

Unless these "key free agents or draft picks" are top 15 talents, it won't matter. Name me a contender that does not have a top 10-15 talent(top10-15 in whole NBA). Going out and getting a player that sounds good is not the answer. Top shelf talent wins titles and I don't think the Suns are committed to do whatever is needed to get someone in that group. I would absolutely love for them to prove me wrong though.

Nash is a outstanding player and he will help keep this team around 500 but thats it this team doesnt have enough talent.and staying around 500 means you never get to pick high in the draft so you always will stay around 500 so trade nash and blow this up so we can start rebuilding but the suns wont until the turnstiles quit turning.thats why they wont trade nash he is their cash cow

There was a culture in place when Saver bought the team. Maybe if he sells the team a winning culture can be re-established. The damage this cheap, weak ownership group has done to this franchise is incalculable.

of mediocrity is what has been built and is continuing with this front office and ownership group. They are afraid to part ways with nash to hit rock bottom to rebuild this crumbling organization brick by brick. They wont get a superstar FA. If they do sign someone (outside of nash), they will overpay. They will miss out on a great draft and it will hurt the time frame of the rebuilding process. You think it is bad now, just you wait when nash retires. bottom nba dwellers here we come! Make room for the suns.

I started building my house brick by brick 27 years ago. I just finished the first wall last week. Sarver has ruined what the Suns were and what Colangelo created. Players wanted to be here, now they don't. It's sad

  • Sorry Babby but UR dead wrong
    OpinionH8d (February 9, 2012 9:05 pm)
Everyone knows ur telling the truth when u say the goal is to rebuild while staying competitive- and that's why ur keeping Steve. Problem is it's not even remotely possible. You have to NOT be competitive to get a franchise altering draft pick. No stars are coming here as FA's- face it.
