Few players have captured the imaginations of basketball fans quite like Jeremy Lin did during the 2011-12 season.

The Knicks guard became the very definition of making the most of an opportunity when he broke into the New York starting lineup in February. In 25 starts, the Harvard grad averaged 18.2 points and 7.7 assists as the Knicks went 15-10.

Lin's startling season was cut short by a knee injury, and now his future in the Big Apple is in doubt.

The 23-year-old is a free agent, and could draw considerable interest from several NBA teams. One of those teams, at least according to an ESPN Insider report from David Thorpe, is the Phoenix Suns. Thorpe thinks the Lin-Phoenix marriage makes sense for a number of reasons.

This is my favorite landing spot for Lin if not New York. He would certainly be a starter if Steve Nash leaves, in an offense that is very similar to what he successfully ran as a Knick. Center Marcin Gortat becomes an excellent ball screen partner, and they play at a speed with which Lin is very comfortable.

Even if Nash returns, the Suns would possibly have not only his long-term replacement but someone who can provide a scoring punch off the bench as well as an energy guy with the second unit. It's not hard to remember the impact Leandro Barbosa had as Nash's backup. If they offered enough money, Lin will have to give that opportunity serious consideration regardless of what Nash does.

And Thorpe is right. With or without Nash in the fold moving forward, the Suns need to find their point guard of the future.

Lin is also one of the only free agents in this year's crop that could excite the Suns fan base and put extra fannies in the seats at US Airways Center.

    Agreed, but....
Lin to Phx makes sense for the reasons in the article; similar style, need of a young PG, etc. However, I see Lin either remaining in NY, or going to a team in a market with a substantial Asian population. The reason for this is that he has more value than just what he does on the court. Teams like Golden State for example can over bid what his talent is actually worth because of his ability to tap into (and make money off of) the Asian fan base. But, as a Suns fan, I wouldn't be opposed to a bit of Linsanity!

    This move could happen
but only if the Suns don't resign Nash. Lin will not come cheap. No way they spend the dough on both Nash and Lin. As you said, though, Lin makes sense if Sarver wants to sell tickets. I could see the Suns acquiring Lin and then calling it a day on the free agent market.

    large offer
Lin can not be offered a contract more than about $5mil (gilbert arenas rule). He can pretty much pick the best situation for himself and hope the Knicks dont match. Odds are though, unless Nash goes to NY, they match anything.

    DRAGIC
Forget Lin, get Dragic back. The Suns front office needs to realize they screwed up getting Brooks for Dragic and throw that kid some cash. That'll reinvigorate a diminishing Suns fan base and secure a young PG that knows this system well AND can execute.

    Dragic
I like Dragic better too. My major concern though is the pick n roll. How effective is Gortat without it? Nash was the master. Can Gortat be the same player without him? I am not sure that Dragic or Lin is a fraction as good as Nash was.

    does not matter
Most likely, we will overpay for Lin and his production will not be that great. This team really has no assets to build around a young pg that wont be that great anyways. Its a move we need to make and part ways with Nash and start over. rebuild suns. face it and stop accepting mediocrity.

    Lin to PHX ?
Phoenix's social and political climate doesn't suit most NBA players, so the lack of a Chinatown should be swept aside in the Suns' initial offer. His pal Landry Fields is also a free agent, and it might mean more to Lin to have Fields as a teammate than to reside where there's a Chinatown. Fields would bring hustle, defense, shooting range, and a relatively small salary. BTW, look for Sebastian Telfair to improve. The Suns second and third stringers led by Telfair often outperformed the starters led by Nash.
