Lon Babby has said all along that the Suns, should they fail to land an impact free agent, could use up cap space by making a "one-sided" trade.

And, as it turns out, there may be an opportunity to do just that.

According to Hoopsworld.com, the Memphis Grizzlies may be looking to deal star Rudy Gay this summer in an effort to clear up cap space to re-sign key players.

Unfortunately for the Suns, though, the Grizzlies are not known for making one-sided deals in the name of cap space.

Oh wait, yes they are.

Should Gay actually end up on the trading block, and should the Grizzlies only be seeking cap space in return, the Suns should very much be in the running.

Gay, 25, would be just the type of young star the team could build around, and the 6-foot-8, 230 pound small forward would be a perfect fit for a team that needs help at the wing positions. And he'd be a good fit alongside Steve Nash, should the free agent point guard decide to stick around.

The former UConn star has career averages of 17.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, and has averaged more than 19 points per night in each of the last three seasons.

Gay is known as an exceptional athlete, and he's still getting better in all facets of the game. He signed a five-year, $82 million contract extension in July 2010, meaning there are still three years left on the deal.

And, should the Grizzlies decide they don't want him to spend those final three seasons in Memphis, Phoenix would be a great option.

Lets make a deal, relieve cap space and get younger. I love nash but its time to start fresh. Lets get d. Williams and e. gordon on top of that. Imagine d will at point e. Gord at shooting gaurd r. Gay at small forward, channing fry at power forward, and the polish hammer at center. Sounds like a good starting 5 to me. Idk im just dreaming.

You are dreaming. Why would Memphis let their best player go like that? Focus on oj mayo and suns or 2013 draft?

    Come on now.
OJ Mayo? You have got to be kidding? Why would the Grizzlies trade Rudy Gay? I'll simply ask a question with a question. Why did the Grizzlies trade Pau Gasol to the Lakers for Kwame Brown?

    Perfect fit.
I don't think there is a prayer of it happening, but I would take Rudy Gay in a heart beat. Young, versatile, long could play 2 or 3. Add a big to that and you might have something.

    Nice player, but...
I don't like the size of his contract. He's scheduled to make roughly $16, $17.5, and $19+ million the next three years. That's a lot of cap space for a guy that hasn't even made an all-star team yet.

    If
waiting on a one-side deal to fall into their lap is the strategy, the Suns are in a great deal of trouble.
