The Kendall Marshall era is underway in the Valley of the Sun, as the young point guard was introduced as the newest member of the Phoenix Suns Friday after being picked 13th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft.

For Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby, it couldn't have come any sooner.

"He represents everything we want this franchise to be, to continue to be and to be into the future," Babby said on Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Friday. "The things we did in the [drafting] process all pointed in the same direction unequivocally, and when that happens, you feel very comfortable with the choice you're making."

After missing the playoffs for the second straight year and with two-time MVP Steve Nash's place on the roster uncertain, Babby acknowledges that Phoenix is entering a rebuilding phase, and it starts with Marshall.

"We have a likelihood of some turbulent times ahead," he said. "You need to have a guy with a steady hand who can represent us well on and off the court and will help steer us through those times."

But what qualities does Marshall have that will guide the Suns from another inadequate season?

"Leadership, court vision, his ability to push the ball and be a true point guard and his absolute desire to be here," explains Babby. "All of those things are the reason we took him."

Critics of the selection cite the 20-year-old's lack of quickness and his inability to shoot the ball, but Babby is assured Marshall is their man.

Kendall Marshall is a good fit for the Phoenix Suns. The Suns drafted the player that they wanted. Free agents are attracted to the Phoenix Suns because of the quality of the organization.
"We understand that a player is going to have pluses and minuses," said Babby. "One of the things we liked about him is that he would be the first to embrace that he's not the most athletic player in the draft. The fact that he recognizes it and is prepared to work and overcome whatever deficiency he has tells you a lot about him as a person and gives us great confidence that he will succeed."

Marshall's success is one thing, but the Suns 2012-13 season is something else entirely. With seven players expected to hit the free agent market on Sunday, Babby and the Suns will have their hands full filling the roster.

When asked if Marshall's point guard mentality of ‘pass first, shoot later' will be a draw to potential signees, Babby thinks so.

"Absolutely it's a draw," said Babby. "It's a factor in that [Marshall] is a winner because he makes the players he plays with better and he understands the team concept, the same way Nash has during his time here. Everybody likes playing with someone who makes them better, who is a facilitator and who is unselfish.

"He's a throwback in that sense and we think that's a positive."

Now that we have Marshall...Nash must go
It is impossible to be bad when you have a great HOF player like Nash. He is just so good, he still raises the level of the entire team on his own. Without Nash last year, we are a bad team and in the Top 10, maybe top 5. This time next year we could be primed to make a top 10 pick and add a big name FA...if Nash leaves. We would have a rookie PG and take our lumps but we can get better from that. Thank you Steve for your time here, it was incredible to watch you orchestrate but its time to move on for both parties.

    Sorry Coach
If Nash leaves your days are numbered. Can see Sarver turning it over to Thunder Dan as he would be cheaper and require defense to be played. I do not see Marshall being the answer to rebuilding. Have to have scorers and no FA is going to get excited about coming to play with a 20 year old PG regardless of what Babby says.
