With the New Orleans Hornets still expected to match the four-year, $58 million offer the Phoenix Suns made to restricted free agent guard Eric Gordon, Suns' brass is looking elsewhere to bolster their roster.

Enter O.J. Mayo, the Memphis Grizzlies free agent who confirmed via twitter Friday that he is indeed talking to the Suns.

The 24-year-old Mayo was the third overall pick in the 2008 draft by Minnesota before being dealt to Memphis on draft night. He was a starter for his first two years in the league, but has come off the bench in the last two seasons. In 2011-12, Mayo averaged 12.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest in 66 games.

For his career, Mayo has averaged 15.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

    Don't understand?????
Just went to players tab on NBA.com and compared Shannon Brown vs. OJ Mayo. Same size, wt. minutes played last year was the same. However Shannon had better numbers. Why is Mayo better than Brown? Or why are the Suns more interested in Mayo than the statiscally equal if not better Brown?

It's because Mayo has a much bigger upside. Last year was Mayo's worst season and Brown's best season. Mayo hasn't hit his potential yet and Brown won't get much better than last year.

He was drastically mismanaged in Memphis. They tried to force him into a PG role, and then made him the "sixth man" spark off the bench. You cant just compare ppg - Brown was -75 on the plus minus, Mayo +33. The ball stops with when brown touches it - like i said before, the Melo Effect.

Mayo is way better than Brown
Mayo's numbers have been down the last couple years because he wasn't a top scoring option in Memphis. However Brown for much of last season was a top scoring option for the suns. When you have the likes of Gasol, Randolph and Rudy Gay at your disposal your not going to get a lot of opportunities. Also if you put Mayo in an uptempo system where he is a top scoring option and has free reign to take shots he is going to thrive.

    Mediocre team here we come
I love spending money to spend it, This team has no chance of doing anything but getting the 10-13 pick in the draft this coming year and the years to come. Glad we set the bar so low with these signings rather than just being bad for a few years to get a superstar in the draft, which is the only real way to build. Thanks for another few years of "playoff" basketball, not championship, but "playoff."

    Comparing players
Actually the numbers that NBA.com are Mayo's playoff numbers. Mayo actually had better numbers last year than Brown. Mayo averaged 12.6 ppg 3.2 reb and 2.6 asst. Brown was 11 ppg 2.6 reb and 1.2 asst.

Why are we talking about Shannon Brown???
Brown got 24 minutes a game on a pretty awful team and chucked up 15 shots a game. He can't dribble, create his own shot or even guard his own position, Mayo can do all of those and doesn't need 15 shots to get 15 points. He might be a better sign than Eric Gordon in my opinion. Mayo and Rose were neck and neck for ROY their first year (Gordon was a rookie that year too), Mayo could be that type of player again with minutes and trust from his coach. Then we use that extra space to sign Carl Landry or Scola and Lopez and then amnesty Childress because he just isn't working out.

i dont see how you can say we put off getting a superstar, when two years ago these guys were potential #1 overall picks. just because they havent sky rocketed to the top doesnt mean they wont still be stars in the right situation. Nash wasnt a star when he left phoenix the first time either.
