The Phoenix Suns have won the rights to former Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola via an amnesty waiver claim.

The Suns reportedly outbid several teams for Scola's services, including the Dallas Mavericks.

According to Arizona Sports 620's John Gambadoro, Scola's contract with Phoenix is for three years.

The NBA's 30 teams were told Phoenix won the blind auction for Scola on Sunday. To make room for Scola the Suns have waived forward Josh Childress.

"We are excited to have won the bid for Luis Scola and to add a player of his caliber to our roster," said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby in a press release. "We greatly value the production he will bring and the leadership he will provide to our younger players. "

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound Argentine averaged 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Rockets last season. The Rockets chose to utilize their amnesty provision to waive the remainder of Scola's three-year, $21 million contract.

In five years with the Rockets, Scola averaged 14.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

While Scola has been solid for Houston, Childress has had little success since joining the Suns in 2010.

The forward appeared in just 88 games over two seasons. The former Stanford star and Atlanta Hawks swingman was generally a fixture on the bench in Phoenix, and had long been rumored as a likely amnesty victim.

"We thank Josh Childress for his contributions," Babby said. "He is a consummate professional."

    Assets
The FO is gathering assets. Something big in the works? If not, I still like Scola. Frye and/or Lopez will not be on the team next year.

    Like it
PG: Dragic/Marshall/Telfair SG: Dudley SF: Beasley/Frye/Warrick PF: Scola/Morris C: Gortat/Lopez Well, just like that, we're more physical than we've been in a while. Kinda like the look of this team. Will it win a title? No, but it won't be painful to watch on D. Not sure about Dudley at SG, though.

    NICE
Solid addition to the team, Scola is an old school post player, love the idea of pairing him w/ Beasley Dragic should know him well also does this dismiss the any chance of signing Mayo?

    Scola
I love this addition. He has great chemistry with Dragic, he's a good scorer, passer and plays solid defense. Childress played his time out here like a true professional, he'll find a place somewhere. I'm excited to see Markeiff play next year, he's tearing it up in the Summer League.

    Scola
Scola is a solid addition and should push Frye to the bench where he is best at. Nice contract too.

Mentioned This in a Previous Article
Glad to see the Suns are thinking the way I am thinking. When it was news the Rockets were going to amnesty Scola, the first thought for me was for the Suns to take advantage of a big man who likes being in the paint. No doubt this makes the Suns a little bit tougher inside. Great aquisition.

If you can get a scorer too?
This a nice addition. Scola can play. Certainly not a star. Contract not out of whack. Surprised they got him for that. Upgrade over Childress. If you could add Mayo, Suns would be similar to last year and compete for the 8th spot
