Former Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash said that he wanted to return to the team because he was unhappy about the past few seasons and wanted to play a part of the rebuilding process.

"I felt dissatisfied with the last two seasons, not making the playoffs," the new Los Angeles Lakers point guard told Arizona Sports 620's Burns & Gambo Show on Friday. "A big part of me wanted to leave the franchise in a better place than it was the last two seasons and be a part of moving it forward."

However, Nash said it became apparent in June that his time in Phoenix was over, but it was official at the beginning of free agency when the Suns didn't make a serious offer.

"They wanted to go in another direction," he said of the Suns front office staff, adding that he had to push Suns owner Robert Sarver to make the sign-and-trade deal.

Nash said that he likely would have ended up in either New York or Toronto, but when the Lakers surprised him, it was hard to say no.

listen Listen: Steve Nash, Point guard for the Lakers
Steve Nash talks about his decision to head to the Lakers.

"It was completely out of the blue," he said. "Even though you're not allowed to talk to teams, you kind of know what teams are interested. To a certain degree, you kind of know what's going to happen. But the Lakers weren't an option. I didn't even realize they had that trade exception from Lamar Odom. There wasn't really any talk, there wasn't really anything. My agent hadn't really spoken about it as an option, and then they called, shortly after midnight on [July 1] and the door swung open."

During the interview, Nash made no secret about his main desire to play in Los Angeles was because his children, based in Phoenix, would be nearby. But he also said it was exciting to be moving to a contender, especially one that has Kobe Bryant in the ranks.

"I'm not going to go to the Lakers and all the opportunities there because it's the best thing for my family, and not talk to Kobe and show up and realize he wasn't for it, so it was great that he signed off and that he was so enthusiastic about it and positive," Nash said. "You could feel it. He was genuine and excited. That kind of sealed the deal."

Nash said that, despite the move, he has still received a lot of support from Suns fans and respects those who aren't happy about it. However, he is lost when it comes to saying goodbye to a city and fanbase he calls home.

"How do you possibly say goodbye and really show your appreciation for what the last eight years have meant to me -- all the people, faces and places in the Valley -- that are a huge part of my life?"

    don't care what nash says
i hope the lakers lose every single game. i would not have not have minded to see nash go to new york, toronto, or dallas. but he goes to the lakers to ride the coattails of kobe and i think it is pathetic. i do not want to see him win a ring with kobe. and i am not a true laker hater either. i do not care when the lakers win. but to see nash join a team that he could not beat himself two years ago to me is just sad. if he is going to miss his kids so much playing on the east coast, then just retire. if he wins a ring with the lakers, that ring is tainted.

    Softening my stance against Nash
I called Nash a traitor when the trade was first announced.I was already reconsidering somewhat, but the interview today solidified things for me. Once it was no longer an option for Steve to come back here, I can't fault in him wanting to find the best situation for himself. I understand where is coming from and while I won't root for the him in head to head matchups with the Suns, I hope he gets a title to round out his Hall of Fame career.

someone needs to call bullhockey on nash
i always liked steve nash as a ball player. i've never been fond of anything that he has to say. it's almost always cliches and platitudes. but his insistence that he only signed with the lakers, because he wanted to stay close to his children is pure hogwash. phx offered him a a two year contract, and it would have kept him very close to his children in the phx area. i believe it was 2 yrs at 6m per. lakers signed him for 3 yrs at 27m total contract. 9m per yr. sure it was more money, but it was always about the 3 years for steve. kids came secondary. it was all about the money.

    Re: notsure
i have not seen a single place that it was ever verified that we offered Nash any kind of contract. I heard all the hear say reporters said was from their "sources close to the situation", and thats it. I for one, recognize that it is a business and allegiances only go so far. There comes a point a person has to look out for #1 - and i hope Nash gets his title, but, as he said in the interview, i will not be rooting for LA

Hiding his selfishness behind his kids
Nash made 2 things abundantly and repeatedly clear. 1. He wanted a chance to win. 2. He wanted to get paid because pay=respect. Only place he could get both was LA. Toronto and Phoenix could pay but couldn't win. NY and Miami could win but couldn't pay. LA could do both. It had NOTHING to do with his kids. That's just PR bull to try to soften the blow to Nash's image. And our local media is dumb enough to eat it up. Ray Allen is a traitor, but Nash? He just loves his kids. Such garbage.

He obviously made a cold, uncaring business decision. I can respect that. The rivalry between the Suns and Lakers obviously doesn't mean as much, if anything at all, to Nash as it does to some fans. And that's fine. But don't hide that callousness behind your kids. It's despicable. I've lost every last shred of respect I had for Nash. Class act? He WAS.

    i'm just glad
that i won't have to set thru another one of his sanctimonious public service announcements. the 'i have them in my house' has worn real thin with me. he's just so much smarter than the rest of us. ralph. speaking of which, do i need to apologize to gambo for complaining about the 'i have them in my house' line? or 'my wife, or daughter, drives one'. gambo is such a huge superstar, i base all my big ticket purchases based on his advice. i think he even knows more than barry O.

Ask his wife! I wonder if she thinks he is a class act?

    give nash a break
Ive always rooted for players more than teams, and Nash was a guy I always thought was worth rooting for. He's Not only a hardworking player, but a guy with class and dignity. If he wants to try to win a ring with the lakers, who else has earned the right to that opportunity more than him? I am relieved he went to a contender, he deserves it and I will be rooting for Nash until he hangs it up.

    How can it be
..that the Suns didnt try really hard to keep him? I heard Suns representatives on the radio all of last year talk about how it was vital that he stay with them. Is it possible they were lying thru their teeth? Welcome to the new look Mediocre Suns!
