With the NBA season nearly 50 percent complete, one thing is certain when it comes to the Phoenix Suns: they're not very good.

The Suns entered play Wednesday with a 12-24 record to go along with a three-game losing streak. They've lost nine of their last 10 games.

Yet, when Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby looks at where the team is, he says things are moving along pretty much as scheduled.

"What we've tried to do and the way I would try to describe it and the way we talk about it a lot in our office is we want our soil to be fertile," he told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Wednesday with regards to the Suns having a bevy of quality players but a lack of a true star. "And we want to have all the pieces in play so that when we get the kind of player that we all know we need, all of the culture, all of the soil has been cultivated so we can sprout and grow quickly."

As Babby admitted, though, how the Suns will acquire that star player remains a question mark.

"Do you get that player in the draft, do you get that player in a trade, or do you develop that player," he asked.

The Suns possibly being so close, yet, so far from being good is not easy for Babby to stomach. His team is rapidly digging a hole that will be difficult climb out of, and while the Suns have been in the NBA's draft lottery each of the last two years, this is by far the worst they've been in his tenure.

Babby said he "hates" that the team is doing so poorly, but added he cannot get "caught up in the moment" and make a move that may benefit the team now but not in the future.

"You can't get caught up in the moment; we're not going to be in the business of quick fixes to try and win a few more games in the short run that makes no sense in terms of the best interests, long term, of the franchise," he said. "So we're disappointed -- profoundly disappointed -- that we're not playing better, we're not winning more games, but in some sense the plan is intact and we're moving forward."

So, in other words, don't expect the Suns to make a move solely because of the recent struggles.

"You can't operate out of panic or, as painful as it is for us, for Alvin, for our players, to be in the throes of this kind of situation, you can't exacerbate it by making rash decisions that are going to feel good in the short run and not be good in the long run," he said. "If I'm not doing that then I don't belong in the job."

Babby said his job is to make sure the franchise stays focused on long-term success and does not do anything that may damage those prospects.

    Rash Move
I think theres a difference between a rash move and a smart move. Theres not much on our team that will be here/be at the same skill level when we are on the upswing. The smart move would be to stage a semi-firesale and get what you can for Gortat, Scola, and any other piece someone would buy (Telfair, Brown, Oneal, etc). It may make you worse this year, but you have to hope it is positive in the rebuilding. Look at the year they traded Starbury and Penny. That year was painful, the following year they retooled. After we get through the season it will be a memory.

    Not Scola
I wouldn't get rid of Scola. Scola at 4 million is good. You will not get anyone with that skill level for 4 million. Scola is not a go to guy but more of a blue collar guy. He has been asked to do more because the Suns suck so bad.

    Rash Moves
Robert Sarver hates Phoenix. His life goal is to make ever human in Maricopa County miserable. And he is nearly there. Do you remember when the Suns weren't the laughing stock of the sports world. Gawd, I wish we had loving and caring ownership... like say the Maloofs (huge step up from Rob-Dawg Sarver). I'd even take Donald Sterling over Robert Sarver.

    Scola
While I like Scolas game as a whole, I just dont think he fits here. Theres not a huge chance he will even be as skilled as he is now in 3-4 years. Id rather have Morris gain some experience and give Frye the minutes next year or bring in another peice

    Please sell team....
Sarver and Babby should be ashamed of themselves for the product they have put on the court this year....who didn't know that Beasley was gonna be a joke? Sarver thought Kerr wasn't that important as a GM and look where it's got them.Plus he'll never dish out the huge money for a franchise player again.Look at all the empty seats now at the games.Sell the team to someone who cares and isn't afraid to really spend some money on real players, not some lazy hacks....

What is wrong with you people
Spend money? On WHO? We had down years when Jerry was owner. WHO were we going to get? Derron Williams wasnt coming here. Eric Gordon is always injured, and they mad him a max offer. If your are going to say their were better alternatives... maybe you could suggest what they are.

Come on Babby! Stay the course, so why are you talking to Memphis about Roy who makes $17 mil per year? That guy is not any answer.

Keep A Few, Ditch the Rest
You keep Dragic, Morris, Scola, Tucker, and Gortat unless there is a real solid deal to trade Marcin. The rest are expendable. I am hoping Babby proves me wrong, but to date, I am not a fan. I don't question Sarver's desire to win, nor do I think he is cheap (he pulled the trigger on a Shaq deal that put us way over the cap for 2+ seasons). He should have kept Kerr and bounced Mike D. I question his personnel decision-making.

    Fertile soil?
Babby said: "The way we talk about it a lot in our office is we want our soil to be fertile." Soil becomes fertile because of manure. Which would be a good description for ownership, management and this rag-tag group of role players. No plan here. They should trade role players like J. O'Neil to contenders for late picks and better role players to borderline playoff teams for mid-round picks. And they should be willing to take on salary with their cap space and expiring salaries for more picks. But then again, they would probably blow the picks.
