Alvin Gentry is no longer the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, as it was announced Friday that he and the team have decided to part ways.

The Suns lost 98-94 to the Milwaukee Bucks at US Airways Center Thursday night. The defeat, their fourth straight at home, dropped the Suns' record to a Western Conference-worst 13-28.

Gentry was in his fifth season as head coach of the Suns and had compiled a record of 158-144. The 58-year-old became the coach of the team in February of 2009 on an interim basis when Terry Porter was fired in his first season on the job. Gentry guided the Suns to an 18-13 mark the rest of the season. He was given the job on a permanent basis following the completion of the 2008-09 season

Undoubtedly, the finest moments of the Gentry era came in the 2009-10 season when the Suns reached the Western Conference Finals before falling to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. Los Angeles would go on to defeat the Boston Celtics to win the NBA championship.

The Suns have missed the postseason in three of the last four seasons and are very much in danger of doing so again this season.

The Suns don't play another game until next Wednesday when they travel to take on the Sacramento Kings.

"firing a very good coach is another huge mistake" I agree, but what very good coach did they fire?

    Gentry Firing
Bottom line is that Sarver and Babby should have been fired instead. They have managed to dismantle the Suns, cut out the heart and leadership and brought in players that can't play. It is their leadership, no floor leadership and bringing in only second tier role players (some of whom just aren't good) that have brought this upon us. They alone are destroying the season fan base and season ticket base.

Stupid Move... As usual for the Suns
Goes right along with every other move made by this management! Got to maintain the Club's Culture! No one is buying that the head coach position is where the problem is... If you want to win games and fill seats, you have to invest in players. Head Coaches and staff are not magicians. Good luck finding a decent coach that can do a better job with this mediocre roster. Sarver... Love it or leave it!

    The coach gets fired
becuase the players suck. First fire the owner, that's the only way this team will start to move in the right direction.

    No surprise
Make Thunder Dan the next head coach. He has a good balance of defense and offense duringhis playing days, this is something the Suns need. Now just draft us a starting 5 and we'll be back to kickin the Lakers around like the dogs they are.

    one more thing
I wasn't a big fan of Sarver and Babbvy and them but the Nash deal was brilliant and those draft picks we got coming will revitalize this franchise. Excellent move for a player way past his prime.

    Blame game
Go ahead and blame Gentry, but a coach has to have something to work with. Colangelo always cared about winning - can't say the same for Sarver. As the empty seats in the arena increase, maybe his diminishing bottom line will motivate him to pay for some quality players. I doubt it!

    Pathetic
I miss the Colangelo days. Sarver is a joke of an owner. Babby and Blanks are just as ridiculous. But Gentry wasn't. Alvin's the only one that knew we had to lose to get better. Look what he did when he had a competent team. Who are they going to hire? I hate when teams make moves like this and don't have a Plan B. Sarver, if there's any decency left in you, sell this team to an owner who knows what they're doing. Pathetic.

    Fire Ownership!
We are so far from the Colagelo days and "Your Phoenix Suns". I don't know this current Suns team. When I go to games the place seems different. RIP old Suns. It would have been nice to see a ring before this new ownership destroyed everything Colagelo built. SAD! (Former Suns fan)

Can we throw ourselves at Colangelo and ask him for forgiveness?
