The Phoenix Suns could use a franchise player, and it appears they're interested in taking one from the Atlanta Hawks.

According to HoopsWorld.com, the Suns are pursuing forward Josh Smith.

The Suns are pursuing Josh Smith, according to multiple league sources. Phoenix will try to acquire Smith before the deadline or, if that fails, through a sign-and-trade deal next offseason.

The Suns are very interested in Smith and have had exploratory talks with the Atlanta Hawks about the 27-year-old forward. Phoenix views Smith as a franchise player who can be one of the cornerstones of the team for years to come. The Suns have been searching for a face of the franchise since Steve Nash's departure last summer, and Smith could be exactly that. If the Hawks decide it's time to part ways with Smith, the Suns will be one of the teams on the phone.

Smith, 27, is averaging 16.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.2 blocks per game. He has career averages of 15.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.2 blocks per game.

Known for being a versatile player and excellent athlete, Smith would not come cheap to anyone looking to make a deal or looking to sign him to a new contract.

The Hoopsworld report mentions Marcin Gortat, Jared Dudley, Michael Beasley and some expiring contracts that might be of interest to the Hawks, and the Suns also have a few draft picks that could be used as trade bait.

No matter what, it's safe to say Phoenix would be in some sort of bidding war if Smith was to be made available.

    Rumor
    Id say this is likely more of a rumor than anything. Other than draft picks, the suns dont have a lot of valuable pieces - especially to a team like the Hawks who are sort of in a similar boat in needing a cornerstone.

    Smith and Howard
    You heard it right, Blanks and Co. are looking at acquiring Josh Smith to help lure Dwight Howard to the desert. Smith and Howard have made it no secret that they'd like to play on the same team. From my understanding, Blanks believes that Howard and Smith are those cornerstone players the Suns need. If they trade for Smith, it would be contingent on him signing a max deal. They'd have room for one more max contract this summer. Hhm....

    NO WAY!!!!!!!!
    Ummmmmm, Not if it requires giving up Gortat AND 2 first round picks . I just don't see it . Smith is a good player but not worth THAT MUCH.

    NO Josh Smith
    Please tell me Suns you aren't thinking Josh Smith is a Franchise guy. 16 points per game guy who shoots 44% from the field and 50% free throw shooter. The guy is a dunker at that is it. Please don't trade away your team for this guy...

    @sillysoft
    He became a franchise player because the GM is an agent. He is still selling guys to management that aren't worth it. However, since it's also being reported that these reports are false, then it's a moot point.

    Why the heck
    NOT? This guy is a solid player, maybe not a max player guy but he's a talent. He's a double double guy night in & night out. ATL has screwed up their team so bad the past couple of years.
