listen Listen: Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby
Lon Babby discusses the team's trade deadline moves as well as the second half of the season.

The Phoenix Suns made a pair of trades before the deadline to do so passed.

The first sent a future second round pick to Houston in exchange for forward Marcus Morris. The second moved point guard Sebastian Telfair to Toronto in exchange for a center Hamed Haddadi and second round pick.

A guest on the Suns Midseason Report on Arizona Sports 620 Thursday, Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby said the team had long toyed with the idea of adding Morris, who is the twin brother of 2011 Suns draft pick Markieff.

"There is a unique and special bond between these two twin brothers and we have been intrigued about it, really, back to when we drafted Markieff two years ago," he said. "We've discussed it with Houston over the time and the demands were always a little bit more than we wanted or the timing wasn't right, and we thought this was a great opportunity for us.

"I think it's going to help both players, but at the very least it's going to help Markieff and that will be valuable in and of itself."

Babby said the trade was "exactly the kind of move I feel like we should be making", as it brought a young player on board without costing the team one of its precious first round draft picks over the next couple years. And while it did cost them a second round selection, they gained one back in the Telfair trade.

That deal, Babby said, was made with a few factors in mind, including Telfair's impending free agency and lack of playing time behind Goran Dragic and rookie Kendall Marshall.

"The other motivation was we wanted to get an asset back, and Haddadi may be interesting, may not be, but a prime motivation was the second round pick and we got it in 2014, which spreads our draft picks out a little bit," he said.

That was it for the Suns, who are currently 18-37 and last place in the Western Conference. Though they were rumored to be involved in other deals -- some big, some little -- nothing else was done. In fact, Babby said the Suns were not close to making any trades that ultimately didn't get done.

"We were not close to doing anything else, and 99 percent of what you read about what they said we were thinking about doing was inaccurate," he said.

But, Babby admitted that reports about interest in one of his players were accurate.

"We got a fair number of calls about Jermaine (O'Neal) and a number of our other players," he said. "Part of what happens during this process, which I don't like but it's unavoidable, is that rumors are flying left and right, many of them -- maybe more than many -- maybe the vast majority if not almost all of them have no merit, and that's just become a part of the job that you have to deal with."

Babby said O'Neal, who at 34 is having a bounce-back season with the team, is someone head coach Lindsey Hunter likes having around, sets a good example and professed no desire to leave.

"He's just too valuable for us to give up, under the circumstances," he said. "And we want to give our team, we want our opportunity to be as competitive as we can be and play as hard as we can every night, and he's giving us that.

"So there would be no reason to move him."

    Lon Babby's resume
On February 24, 2011 the Suns traded Dragić to the Houston Rockets with a first round (lottery protected) draft pick for point guard Aaron Brooks.

That trade was Blanks' call. Babby is in charge of financials. He does not assess talent or initiate trades. He approves contracts and makes sure that contracts are fiscally sound. Being that the Suns really have no bad contracts (people could say Beasley's, but not all of it is guaranteed), I would say he is doing a decent job. I am iffy about Blanks, but will give him props for signing Dragic back, and basically admitting a mistake.

    So The Suns' Front Office...
Actually made a semi decent move for once it seems... Well I guess ill give credit where credit is do on this one. Granted its not a huge team altering move, but putting the Morris twins together is atleast worth a look... Hell I'm acty kinda curious about this one... Although I admit my expectations aren't high I feel it really can't get worse... And if it does, oh well possible better draft pick!

    Agree
Keep holding onto that deal. Bottom line was Dragic wasnt performing at that point. Had he not gone to Houston and gotten that experience he likely wouldnt be the player he is now. Outside of that deal though, this front office really hasnt done a ton of bad deals. They got Gortat for Turkoglu, havent wasted a lot of money in FA (outside of Beasley who i think was a risk worth taking). It takes a while to clean up the mess of bad contracts that were here

Hey 7sunsfan13 how the heck do you know what Blanks and Babby are in charge of do you work for the organization or are you just another mindless sheep who actually believes Sarver when he says a majority of the Suns fans aren't upset with the state of the franchise, keep drinking Sarver, Babby, and Blanks Kool-Aid you mark.

    On his watch
I am sure the Dragic's trade was not Blanks alone' call. If it's on Babby's watch he has some say into it as well does the owner and a few other people. Going forward the Suns need to make a trade in the off season, they don't have a lot of cap room moving forward. They have 46 million committed on a $58,000 cap. Let's see what they do. Babby is the mouth piece of the Suns he has a lot of say so in what takes place this summer. He may only take credit for the good trades, but don't fool yourself he's involved.

I wouldnt doubt there will be moves. We couldnt move Scola (one of the more useful pieces) this season, and Gortat and Dudley still have years left so there was no rush to trade them. I would much rather be active at the deadline NEXT year when we are looking at a strong 2014 draft

    Don't get O'Neal stance
Suns now have 6 players (Gortat, Scola, Haddadi, 2 twins and O'Neal) fighting for minutes at TWO positions, so why not trade O'Neal to a contending team for a late first-rounder? Because he makes the Suns more competitive!? What does that say about the rest of the 4s & 5s??? They don't play hard every night? Isn't the idea to develop players now!? Or, is this more or the same "we are still trying to be competitive this year so buy tickets" when nobody was actually interested?

Let me preface this by saying I agree. But their logic that they have spoken on is that Oneal has been a positive locker room guy and a good "mentor" for the younger guys. Cant argue with that if its true. I would also throw Beasley into that logjam though since I honestly feel he is a stretch 4 and not a 3.

If the Suns could have gotten a 1st for O'Neal, don't kid yourself, they would have. At this time, he is more valuable to the Suns as that veteran professional presence than for some low 2nd round pick that would only have been offered.
