Ryan Roberts won over Diamondbacks fans with his fire and hustle in 2011.

A career journeyman, Roberts posted a .249 batting average with 19 home runs, 65 RBI, 86 runs scored and 18 stolen bases, and was the primary third baseman for the NL West champs.

Filling that role again in 2012, though, could prove costly for the Diamondbacks. According to Ben Lindbergh of ESPN Insider, Roberts is Arizona's biggest weakness, as he noted in a story titled Contender black holes.

Last season, D-backs third baseman Ryan Roberts hit .313/.413/.594 in April but slumped to .239/.329/.402 during the season's final five months. PECOTA projects more of the same -- .246/.330/.393 -- from him in 2012. Remember, he is basically a minor league journeyman who, last year, at the age of 30, surpassed 500 plate appearances in a season for the first time in his career. Not much upside here.

As important as Roberts was to the D-backs' success last season, lost in the excitement of the season was the fact that his numbers simply were not that good.

While no one is saying the team should cut the guy, does anyone really think the D-backs will win the West again with a third baseman who hits .250 with fewer than 20 home runs and 70 RBI?

Maybe Roberts will be better than last year. It was the first time he saw more than 500 at bats in his career, and it's possible the best is yet to come from one of the team's emotional leaders.

But, more likely, Roberts is what he is: the type of player every team needs on the roster, but not an everyday third baseman on a championship team.

    This guy is right
I totally agree with this writer that Roberts is not the answer at 3rd base. I don't know if everyone else remembers our last Mr. Hustle that a fan favorite, aka Eric Byrnes. I wasn't a fan of Byrnes, even though he played hard, he wasn't very good. And the same goes for Roberts. He may play hard, but he is what he is, a backup utility infielder at best. He's fine for the this year. I do hope the front office has a backup plan in case Roberts keeps up his second half pace from last year. And I hope they have a long term plan for third base.

    Arizona Fans
I was born and raised in AZ, but I shake my head at how fickle AZ fans are. They will ignore the short comings of players and root for them because they have some defining characteristic that is appealing. Most of the older large cities embrace the players, but also understand the business side and know that upgrades are opportunities that shouldn't be passed up. I like Roberts, but I was disappointed they didn't address the position in the offseason

    Last 7 Third Basemen to win World Series: 2011: Freese- 97G 10HR 55RBI .298AVG 2010: Sandoval- 152G 13HR 63RBI .268AVG 2009: Arod- 137G 30HR 125RBI .270RBI 2008: P. not as many great 3B as you think!
Roberts 2011: 143G 19HR 65RBI .249AVG Led all [qualifying] 3rd basemen in Runs Scored, 2nd in SB, 6th in HR, 10th in RBI. 8th in AVG. This was all in his first "full" season, and could be hitting his stride at the plate (30yrs old). He also could see a decline, but so could most players in the league. The argument that you can't win a WS with this caliber player is false. Would you guys rather have Mark Reynolds playing third again?

    Great Utility Player
Not an everyday player. Although I wouldn't want to go through the season without this type of player. And to think that now our SS is either Bloomquist or McDonald for possibly a good portion of the season, we are lacking in some slugging on the left side of the infield. If the Dbacks had a slugger at 3rd, we could manage with a nifty SS with limited tools at the plate.

    Seriously?
How short the memory is for both writers AND Arizona fans. Who was the 3rd baseman for the Diamondbacks last year when they won 94 games and the NL West? Ryan Roberts. Why all of a sudden is he a horrible option at 3rd base? He scored 86 runs, hit 19 homers and runs his butt off. Why is that not that great? The comments listing the other third basemen from WS teams in the last few years would have been good research for the author to have done prior to writing such a poorly thought out article. Joe Crede? Pedro Feliz? Seriously?

I agree with Zonaball....can they win the west with a player this caliber.......yeah they did it last year. His numbers or his "shortcomings", any worse than CY? When drew went down, and nady went down Roberts became an everyday 3rd baseman for the remainder of the season on a championship team. He definitley wasnt the reason for a 1st round exit either.

    How's this?
    Check Robert's numbers against this guy at 30: 158gms, 610ab, 164hits, 22hr, 77rbi, 88runs, .269avg, with 1 stolen base. The player? Brooks Robinson, 1967

    I'm Loving It!!!
I read this article just before the opener yesterday so I couldn't help but have a big smile on my face when it was ROBERTS who broke the tie with a clutch bases loaded double to put the team ahead for good. The man is an asset not only on the field but in the club house as well, something that CAN'T be measured by numbers. Can't help but root for guys like that. On a side note, looking forward to watching CY have a monster year with the subtle tweaks he's made to his swing in the off season. It's gonna be a great year, go Dbacks!
