The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they have traded Stephen Drew to the Oakland Athletics for shortstop Sean Jamieson.

"These moves are always tough," D-backs' General Manager Kevin Towers told reporters after the trade was announced. "We thanked [Drew] for everything he's done for this organization."

Drew batted .193 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 40 games with the D-backs this season. He missed 137 games over the last two seasons after suffering a horrific ankle injury in July of 2011.

The 29-year-old said he was surprised to hear he was traded after the team's loss to Miami Monday.

"I was a little shocked," Drew said. "But, first and foremost, I want to say thanks to the fans who have supported me and also to the organization.

It's part of the business and I guess it's going to be good on both sides."

Drew is expected to report to Oakland tomorrow and will be reunited with his former manager Bob Melvin.

The 23-year-old Jamieson hit .234 with 10 home runs and 49 RBI in 118 games with Single-A Burlington this season. He was selected in the 17th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Towers believes the young shortstop has a bright future, even if he is a few years away from the big leagues.

"We acquired a young shortstop, a Canadian kid who has speed and power for the position," Towers said. "He's probably a ways away, but he's somebody we think is a legitimate middle-infield prospect, which is something we've lacked in our system."

The 6-foot-0, 193-pound right-handed hitter is a career .234 hitter with 13 home runs and 70 RBI over two minor league seasons in the Athletics organization.

    Gave him away
Wow the Dbacks traded Drew for nothing. Not that he was worth a ton but a 23 year old guy taken in 17th round and not producing, what kinda future they think this kid has. Might as of kept his good defense and hoped the bat came around. Let him walk after the season.

I'm betting you didn't like the Kubel or Johnson trades either, yet they still worked out. Drew was leaving anyways, at least we got something. KT and his boys are a little bit better at evaluating talent than you are, why not sit back and see what the kid can do?

    Budget relief??
We went a little over budget last offseason. Do you think this was also to free up a little money?

    My Defense
Kubel was a FA signing and I had no problem with trading Johnson for Hill. Both guys needed a change and Hill had the better upside and came with Mac. I obviously have never seen Jamieson play at all and yield expertise to KT. I am not passionately against it. Just surprised at Drew's small trade yield. But this is also now 2 trades with Oakland that KT's AZ team is very likely on the losing end of. Spent 30 minutes on scouting/prospect sites and top 50 A's prospects, he is not even an honorable mention. Hopefully, there is a PTBNL in this deal.

    What trade value?
Come on guys Drew has no trade value. 193 hitter and the super agent. Did nobody read or hear that the reason he was not traded earlier was because other teams including Oakland were worried about his attitude and causing trouble in the clubhouse. Watch MLB Network once in a while. Bet Oakland does not pick up that $10 mil option next year.

    Trades With Hope
The only problem I have with the Towers trades is that he is only trying to shed salary while getting just enough talent to justify getting rid of the players that had bigger contracts that used to be here. Drew, Johnson, and attempted Upton but nothing in return except players whom he hopes will strike lightning in a bottle to make him look good. San Diego philosophy here people...

    Opportunity had passed
The chance to get anything of value for Drew had passed. Either let him walk at the end of the season, or get something in return. Either way, Drew wasn't coming back next year.

    This is a good thing
Drew was vastly under-performing this year and there is zero chance that we would have picked up his $10mil option next off season. This saves us a lot of money, we get a decent prospect, and we don't lose any production at the plate. We have quite a few SS's we could plug in there who could hit .193. Good Work KT.
