listen Listen: Kevin Towers, D-backs' General Manager
The GM explains the Justin Upton trade to Burns & Gambo.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said all along he was not necessarily looking to move Justin Upton.

A guest of Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Thursday, Towers even said he didn't expect anything to happen as recently as a couple days ago.

"I would have said 72 hours ago Justin Upton would have started the season as a Diamondback, we had pretty much exhausted everything after the Seattle deal fell through," Towers said. "In the last 48 hours Prado came into the deal, Ahmed came into the deal."

Towers said those players were not offered by the Braves before, and their inclusion into the talks led to the trade that was made Thursday. In exchange for Upton and infielder Chris Johnson the D-backs will receive infielder/outfielder Martin Prado, starting pitcher Randall Delgado, shortstop Nick Ahmed, pitcher Zeke Spruill and infielder Brandon Drury.

The GM, who's had a busy offseason, said he's not necessarily in the business of "winning the deal", but instead hopes both teams benefit. He certainly believes his did.

"Martin Prado, an unsung hero over there in Atlanta," he said. "I've looked at him a lot from the other side and I'm glad he's wearing our uniform now."

Prado, 29, hit .301 with 10 home runs and 70 RBI for the Braves last season. He was an All-Star in 2010, and has the ability to play many different positions.

"He's got Gold Glove votes at second, at third, in left; he's had MVP votes, he's been an All-Star," Towers said. "Just a baseball player."

Towers compared Prado's mindset to that of current D-backs Gerardo Parra, Miguel Montero and Aaron Hill, saying he's "a grinder" who fans will enjoy watching play baseball.

However, a lot of fans enjoyed watching Upton.

A former number one overall selection, Upton is a two-time All-Star who has also earned MVP votes. And while he had a down year last season, he is still viewed as a player with an enormous amount of potential.

Towers understands that, but admits it would have been tough for Upton to return to Arizona after the team tried to trade him.

"I'm sure those questions, he would have wanted to focus and get ready to play," Towers said. "But with his teammates, and when it comes to playing and performing, I never ever questioned his desire to play and to compete."

That said, Towers believes Upton -- as well as the team -- could each benefit from a change. The player gets to play in Atlanta with his brother, and the D-backs are able to move on from an era that was filled with as much disappointment as excitement.

"This kid was brought up at a very young age, he has a lot of talent. A lot was put on his shoulders very early as kind of the face of the franchise, expectations through the roof," Towers said. "It's hard to live up to that when you're 22 and 23 and 24 years old.

"I think going to a place where he'll blend in, be able to play with a lot of good players, a new face, didn't come up through their system, I think it will be better for Justin. And I think it will be better for our organization, as well."

    I wonder...
I wonder what drugs Towers and Lance Blanks are doing together...How are they both clueless? Non-Arizonans are ruining our teams!!!! Not to mention Bidwell passing on Horton...We're becoming very similar to the caliber of competition in Cleveland...

I wonder where you got your Rose Colored glasses? I will stipulate, as I have already, that Upton was mismanaged from the start. I think he got a big head by being called 'the face of the franchise". I still believe he'd be right where he is now, a decent ball player, not great but decent. Upton is not clutch (career .255 BA w/RISP) and gets sloppy on defense.

You do realize Upton still has A LOT of potential with an affordable contract? Look at the junk we received in return, Prado is good but is a rental for one year...We also don't need anymore pitching, we need offense and power...Signing has-beens in Hinkse and Chavez do nothing....hmmm lets add a few more low-graded prospect short stops...Just like the Suns, no star power

    You are not paid
for potential those Steve, you are paid on results. You cannot tie up a bulk of money to a player who has "potential". Sorry but J-Up's is an above average player right now. He's not even the best OF on the Braves team. Parra is a better fielder & who knows what he'll be able to do at the plate with 300-400 + AB's. We upgraded @ 3rd & SS as well.

    Potential?
That does't knock in runs. Prado is a career .287 in those situations. To say nothing of his strike outs. Hinkse and Chavez were brought in as veterans off the bench, not to play every day. After five years of hearing "potential", "star power", he's never had a 100 RBI season, the closest he came was 86 two years ago. Never been considered for a Gold Glove, etc. Is your argument still "potential"?

    I love
how Towers spins all of this and says, on the radio today, how we are going to be right up there with the Giants. BullS$@T. Dodgers and Giants will break the bank to compete with each other and the Padres under ownership by the O'Malley's will do everything in their power to be right there as well. The Rockies are the Rockies but the D'backs will be battling for fourth place in this division for years to come unless they are sold to a deep-pocketed owner who is willing to make the financial committment to winning that will be necessary to get a Western Division Pennant.

    RE: DisgustedD
I do agree with most of your points. However, everyone should be able to imagine what Parra can do with 300-400 abs, because Parra had 385 at bats the past seasons. I would like to say as a lifetime Arizona fan, when we do have players with talent, we can never be happy. This is a fan base that booed Upton most people could not wait to see him gone, and now we B*%*h about the return. We think nothing of the guy until we want to trade him and anything short of Trout isn't enough. I don't get it.

    Fair enough but
my self unlike many others, I am a Native of AZ so I support only our local teams. J-Up came in #1 draft pick overall as almost a savior type for the organization 1 year after we got Stephen Drew. I liked Drew better than J-Up but that's because he played SS & was a contract hitter. I believe Towers has built this farm system back up to be tops in MLB & you'll see a package deal to land a pretty big name IMO. KT is not done & I like what I am seeing especially having CY gone as well.

    RE Fair enough but
I understand your liking of Stephen Drew. My point being is that we have issues with players that aren't big hustle guys. Putting us in positions to trade guys like Upton and reward guys like Eric Byrnes to 30 million dollar contracts. Think about the fan base, the fans love Parra before that Byrnes going all the way back to loving Andy Fox and Craig Counsil. The fans never rallied behind guys like Sexson or Glaus.
