Boone joins Doug and Wolf to talk about the upcoming baseball season.

Somewhat lost in the flurry of moves made by the Arizona Diamondbacks over the offseason is that their pitching staff could be one of the best in baseball.

"First and foremost the Diamondbacks have a pretty good nucleus of starting pitching," ESPN MLB analyst Aaron Boone told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Tuesday when asked if the D-backs could win as presently constrcuted. "They have a chance to pitch."

Ian Kennedy, Wade Miley, Brandon McCarthy and Trevor Cahill will be part of the rotation, with Tyler Skaggs, Patrick Corbin and Randall Delgado vying for the fifth spot. Following them, Arizona's bullpen figures to be quite good, too.

The team will need it.

Boone pointed to the improvements made by the Los Angeles Dodgers and the reigning world champion San Francisco Giants -- along with a San Diego Padres team he believes will surprise people -- as reasons for why the NL West will be a difficult division.

But while many point to the losses of players like Justin Upton and Chris Young as reason for why the offense may take a hit, the team's ability to limit the hits opponents get may keep them in most games.

"But the Diamondbacks have good, solid every day players and a chance, in their rotation, to compete with the upper echelon teams," Boone said. "So I think they're a classic case of if things break right for them they have a chance in the National League West."

    The 2009 staff
looked like championship caliber stuff also. Best to wait till they show us something. Articles like this remind me of the junk leading up to the SB when everybody and their sister predicts the scores. This is just about as meaningful.

"just" one thing dosen't win pennants
And I think that Kevin has thankfully pulled back before reaching the "offensive cliff" (sorry). His potential line up has it all, some sizzle and some pop. Enough diverse characteristics to keep the infielders back on their heels and uncertain. Had they carried out their plan for dink hits, stolen bases and sacrifice bunts to win games, the ushers would have had to spend hours walking up and down the aisles waking up fans after the game.

Ex-Runner, nicely done..."Excuse me, sir. The game ended forty minutes ago. You can go sleep at home now!" And as to the article, everyone can win with pitching. That's what does it in this league! Now to my bold prediction: The Coyotes will score more than the D-Backs. I see a lot of 3-2 games in their future....

    did I read this correctly?
'many point to the losses of players like Justin Upton and Chris Young as reason for why the offense may take a hit'. Who are these "many" you speak of? CY has a career .239 BA, and Upton has been regressing on offence. My prediction is Goldie, Goldie, Goldie. Goldsmidt is going to have an Louis Gonzales (ahmmm, minus the PED's) breakout type season.
