Arizona Diamondbacks

Head-to-head: Comparing Mark Trumbo's 2014 start to that of Luis Gonzalez in 2001

It's early. Very early, in fact.

But with that said, it's safe to say Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Mark Trumbo is off to a torrid start at the dish through the first eight games of the 2014 season.

Trumbo's power surge got us thinking, how does it stack up with the one former D-backs left fielder Luis Gonzalez put together during his magical run through April 2001?

The results might surprise you.

Luis Gonzalez (2001):

Opponent Date Hits Home Runs
RBI Runs Strikeouts Walks
@ Dodgers 4/3 1 1 2 1 2 0
@ Dodgers 4/4 3 2 2 3 0 0
@ Dodgers 4/5 0 0 0 0 1 0

4/6 2 1 2 2 0 1

4/12 2 1 1 1 3 0

Total through nine games:

-10 hits
-Nine runs scored
-Seven home runs
-12 runs batted in
-Eight strikeouts
-Three walks

Gonzalez did, however, finish the month with 13 long balls -- tying Ken Griffey Jr. for the most ever in April.

Mark Trumbo:

Opponent Date Hits Home Runs
RBI Runs Strikeouts Walks
@ Dodgers 3/22 0 0 1 0 1 0
@ Dodgers 3/22 2 1 3 1 0 0
vs. Giants 3/31 3 0 2 2 1 0

4/4 2 1 1 1 1 0

@ Rockies
4/6 1 1 2 1 0 2

Total through nine games:

-11 hits
-Seven runs scored

Will Trumbo get to lucky No. 13 by the end of April? Well, he's certainly on his way.
