The Arizona Diamondbacks brought two men up and sent two men down on Friday, selecting the contracts of outfielder Xavier Paul and pitcher Andrew Chafin from Triple-A Reno, while optioning infielder Nick Ahmed and outfielder Roger Kieschnick to Reno.
Paul, who signed as a Minor League free agent on Thursday, played in 81 games with Triple-A Norfolk in the Baltimore Orioles farm system this season, hitting .251 with 12 home runs and 57 RBI. Paul has a career 12 home runs and 71 RBI in 335 MLB games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds from 2009-13.
A supplemental first-round pick by the D-backs in 2011, Chafin had a combined 8-6 record and 3.96 ERA in 23 starts with Reno and Double-A Mobile this season. He was a midseason California League All-Star in 2012. MLB.com rated Chafin as the D-backs' No. 6 prospect before the season began.
Ahmed hit .228 with one home run and four RBI in 19 appearances with the D-backs this season, while Kieschnick hit .195 with one homer and two RBI in 25 games during three stints with the club.
With 38 men currently on the D-backs 40-man roster, it's possible that both men could soon be called back up.
