The relationship between current Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart and former general manager Kevin Towers goes back a long way. The two have been friends since 1996, when Towers, then GM of the San Diego Padres, hired Stewart as his special assistant.
Now, Stewart holds the same position Towers once held with the D-backs before he was removed as GM in early September. Towers remained in the organization for another month.
There do not appear to be any hard feelings.
Stewart told MLB Network he is currently living in Towers’ house in Arizona.
As the D-backs pushed Stewart to move out of the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Phoenix, Towers offered to share his home.
The two lived together for about a week, before Towers decided to join the Cincinnati Reds’ front office. Once Towers took that job, Stewart stayed in the house, paying rent and making sure to occasionally start up his friend’s motorcycle to keep it clean.
Stewart said he is a great house guest, except for a few pieces of toilet paper in the bathroom trashcan.
