Sedona Red Recap: Diamondbacks let late lead slip away, fall to Dodgers in ten

...

Aggressive baserunning keyed an Arizona Diamondbacks victory on Monday Night.

On Tuesday, that plan didn’t work so well.

Three different Arizona hitters made outs on the basepaths as the Diamondbacks fell to the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 in front of 22,404 fans at Chase Field on Social Media Night. Considering the game went 10 innings, it’s not difficult to see how big each of those outs were.

Welington Castillo got caught trying to stretch a single into a double in the second, and Yasmany Tomas did the same in the eighth. In the seventh, Cliff Pennington was picked off of first after a leadoff single. Three potentially big hits turned into nothing more than rally-killing outs, and LA was able to capitalize.

Despite all that, Arizona still carried a 3-2 lead into the late innings of the game. The Dodgers rallied to tie it with a run of Enrique Burgos in the seventh though, then erupted for three off of David Hernandez in the tenth to pick up the win.

As a result, the D-backs fell to six games behind the NL West-leading Dodgers on the year. They still have a chance to win the series on Wednesday though.

THE GOOD

-Nick Ahmed homered for the second straight night. Originally billed as a defensive specialist, he now has six longballs on the year.

-Paul Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

THE BAD

-With the Arizona fielders shifted right in the top of the second, Yasmani Grandal hammered a Rubby De La Rosa pitch over the left field wall to give the Dodgers an early 2-0 lead. It’s the fifth homerun De La Rosa has surrendered to LA this year.

-One night after picking up his first career Major League win, Enrique Burgos gave up the tying run in the seventh.

STAT OF THE GAME

61: With his first inning walk tonight, Goldschmidt now has 61 on the year. That leads all of baseball and moves him into a tie with Luis Gonzalez for the most ever by an Arizona hitter before the All-Star Break.

HE SAID IT
“We play aggressive, that’s what we do. And sometimes we pay for it… we give some outs away. But we’re going to keep pushing it.” – Chip Hale

NOTED
-Jimmy Rollins hit a foul ball in the seventh that landed in the seats behind home plate and was nearly caught by John McCain.

-De La Rosa has now thrown 94 strikeouts on the season.

-The Diamondbacks are now 27-5 when leading after six innings this season.

-They’re now 5-6 in this 16-game stretch against NL West opponents.

-Arizona optioned Allen Webster to Triple-A Reno and recalled Matt Stites prior to Tuesday’s game.

UP NEXT

The two clubs will wrap up this three game set Wednesday night at Chase Field. Robbie Ray will take the mound for Arizona, while LA throws Brett Anderson. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40, with coverage beginning at 6:00 on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.
Ray (2-3) has given up three runs or less in five of his six starts this season, but only has two wins to show for his work. In his last outing on June 26, he dropped a 4-2 decision to the Padres in San Diego. Wednesday will mark his second career start against the Dodgers.

Anderson (4-4) has been on a roll of late, winning his last two starts – including a 7-1 victory over the Marlins in Miami on June 26. In that game, he struck out 10 while allowing just one earned run over seven innings. Over his last three outings, he has yielded just four earned runs in 21 innings.

In two starts against the D-backs this year, Anderson has allowed three runs while striking out eight over 12 innings.

Despite the fact these two teams are still scheduled to meet eight more times this season, they won’t play again until mid-September after Wednesday’s game.
