Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres, according various reports, has been suspended indefinitely by the National Hockey League pending an in-person visit with league officials Friday.

Torres laid a brutal hit on Chicago's Marian Hossa in the first period of the Coyotes' 3-2 overtime win in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals Tuesday night.

No penalty was called on the play, and Hossa was taken off the ice via stretcher and spent time in a Chicago hospital.

Torres has a history of suspensions, and that is one of the factors that NHL senior vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan considers when doling out suspensions.

The Coyotes lead the series 2-1 with Game 4 slated for Thursday night in Chicago.

Coyotes need to continue playing physical even though this check was over the top, because that's what it takes to win the Stanley Cup.

    Really?
The very next time Torres plays he's going to do the same thing. He just doesn't care. The reason why arizonasports is using Chicago's Comcast feed is because Tyson Nash is a moron. Now Tippet is saying there was no intent to injure? "Chicago is a bunch of homers. If you didn't play hockey you can't criticize the hit" (in grindy sandpapery hockey voice). Idiot.

Brian are you an idiot? The guy left the ice and gave him a shot to the head! Did Torres really need to take a shot to his head vs. just leveling the guy like you normally see?

    Awesome
The NHL could have kept a lot of this from happening had they come down hard on the first pointless act of violence seen in the playoffs this year. Smash a guys head into the glass a couple of times and you're fined $2500. Lay a big hit on a guy and you're out indefinitely. Players will do anything it takes to win, and now they think they can get away with it. All though I must admit, as a 'yotes fan whose girlfriend is a Blackhawks fan, I got tremendous joy out of watching this over and over again on the DVR with her by my side.

He should not have left his feet, however...
The game before Smitty took a hit to the face. that guy got 3 games for trying to take out a vital peice of our team. You have to protect the goalie. Raffi hit a guy that just got rid of the puck on open ice. He should get no more than a fine and shoulda been called as a penalty. He carertainly should get no more than the douscher that tried to take out a defensless goalie that had his head down!! Chicago SUX!

    GREAT- he should be suspended
It's not 'part of the game', it's an unwarranted assault. The puck was not even near him. Nice way to show young players how to play, moron. It's why hockey is one of my least favorite sports - it celebrates assaults and fighting.

How about you watch the replay again and in slow mo...You will see the hit wasn't to the head. Torres's shoulder made contact with Hossa's shoulder/chest. The only negative about the hit was he left the ice a fraction of a second before contact. The guy just got rid of the puck as well.
