Arizona Coyotes hold off late surge by Oilers to win second game in a row: By the Numbers

The Arizona Coyotes are inching closer to .500.
After winning the final two games of a three-game road trip, the Coyotes have improved their record to 8-9-1 — just one victory shy of breaking even.
Arizona’s 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night was thanks in large part to the stellar play of the back-up netminder — the former starting goalie for the Oilers.
Devan Dubnyk played 171 games as a member of the Edmonton Oilers and now one game against them. Dubnyk stopped 33-of-34 shots en route to his fourth victory of the season and second of this road trip.
Goals by Brandon Gormley and Mikkel Boedker were enough to push the now surging Yotes past the Pacific Division’s cellar dweller.
Arizona may now have a goalie controversy on its hands, but as long as the team keeps winning, its an issue the Coyotes can handle.

Arizona’s victory ensured that the Oilers would go yet another night without a victory over a Western Conference team. Edmonton is 0-8-1 this season against teams in its conference.

Devan Dubnyk played his old team for the first time on Sunday. It was also the first time he received back-to-back starts as a Coyote. He responded as well as anyone could ask by stopping all but one Edmonton shot and securing the victory. He now boasts a record of 4-0-1 this season.
1 (Part II)
Brandon Gormley’s first-period goal that put Arizona on the board was the first tally of his young career. The former first-round pick has played 11 NHL games, scoring no points before Sunday. Gormley left the game in the third period with an injury.

Mikkel Boedker’s game-wining third-period goal extended his point streak to four games (2-2-4). The goal was Boedker’s fourth against the Oilers this season — he also recorded a hat trick against Edmonton on Oct. 15.

It took the Coyotes a while to get started, as they did not record their first shot on goal until 6:37 into the contest. By that time, the Oilers had five shots of their own.

It was a homecoming for more than just Dubnyk. Center Sam Gagner also made his return to Edmonton for the first time since being traded from the Oilers in the offseason. He played 13:09 against his former team of 481 games.

Dubnyk’s shutout streak ended after 113:32 with Taylor Hall’s power play goal in the third period. The 28-year-old goaltender shut out the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night and then nearly shut out the Oilers.
