...

Two days after Arizona Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith got his “swagger” back, the Ottawa Senators promptly took it away.

After Mikkel Boedker gave the Coyotes an early 1-0 lead, the Senators reeled off five unanswered goals as part of a 5-1 rout of the ‘Yotes on Saturday in Glendale.

Five different players scored for Ottawa (17-16-8; 42 points) after Boedker’s goal just 4:31 into the first period, and the Coyotes (16-21-4; 36 points) suffered their second blowout defeat in their last three games.

The struggling Smith failed to put together impressive back-to-back performances. After allowing one goal on 35 shots (a .971 save percentage) in Thursday’s 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets, Smith allowed five goals on 33 shots Saturday for a save percentage of just .848.

Here’s how the ‘Yotes fell Saturday, by the numbers:

0

The Coyotes had plenty of power-play opportunities Saturday, but they were 0-for-5 with a man advantage. They were 3-for-5 on the power play in Thursday’s win against the Jets.

2

After winning four consecutive home games, the Coyotes have lost two of their last three at Gila River Arena. They fell 6-0 to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday.

3

Smith has allowed at least three goals in five of his last six games. His goals allowed average is nearing an awful 3.5 for the season.

7

Arizona couldn’t capitalize on its faceoff wins Saturday. The Coyotes won 33 faceoffs to Ottawa’s 26, a plus-7 margin.

12

Boedker’s first-period tally was his 12th goal of the season and his third in Arizona’s last two games. He scored two goals and added an assist in the Coyotes’ win over the Jets.

31

Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson stopped 31 of 32 shots Saturday. He’s allowed just seven goals in four games in net in January.
