The final 23 minutes of Saturday’s game in Ottawa was some of the worst hockey the Arizona Coyotes played all season. Just one day later, the final 23 minutes of Sunday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens was among the best.
Arizona fell behind early, allowing two goals in the game’s first five minutes behind a rookie goaltender making his first career start. However, the 22-year-old Quebec native settled down and stopped the final 16 shots he faced en route to his first NHL victory.
Lauri Korpikoski potted a pair or power play goals, while Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored his team-leading 14th goal to push the Coyotes to their 18th win of the season. All three goals came in the final 23 minutes.
Special teams played a large part in Arizona’s victory. Along with going a perfect 2-for-2 with the man advantage, the Coyotes killed off both Montreal penalties.
Here’s how the Coyotes found the win column on Super Sunday, by the numbers:
2 (Part I)
Lauri Korpikoski had his first multi-goal game of the season and first in nearly two years. His last two-goal game came on March 2, 2013.
2 (Part II)
The Coyotes won when trailing after the second period for just the second time in the team’s last 20 games.
9
Before Sunday’s victory, the Coyotes had lost their previous nine games to the Canadiens on the road. The team’s last win in Montreal was in 1996. They are now 2-6-3 in Montreal since moving to Arizona.
30
Keith Yandle picked up a pair of assists in Sunday’s game, giving him a team-leading 30 for the season.
32-20
Montreal outshot the Coyotes 10-9 in the opening period, but finished with just 10 more the rest of the way. Arizona outshot Montreal 23-10 over the final two periods and 32-20 overall.
50
The Coyotes allowed a pair of goals in the first period, pushing their season total to 50. That is the third-most goals allowed in the opening period in the NHL this season.
190:46
Arizona broke Montreal’s shutout streak of 190:46 on Korpikoski’s second-period goal. The Canadiens shut out their last two opponents before Sunday’s game.
