Coyotes struggle to generate offense in loss to Avalanche: By the Numbers

Mike McKenna had a rough first game as an Arizona Coyote.
The goaltender recorded five shutouts in the AHL before being recalled by the Coyotes, but Monday night’s 5-2 loss to the Avalanche in Colorado was anything but.
The first two pucks came early, and within ten seconds of each other — a bucket of ice water to welcome McKenna back to the big time after not playing in an NHL game since Dec. 23, 2013.
Colorado’s Cody McLeod had the first at 2:54, and Matt Duchene netted the second goal at 3:03 in the first period.
Yet the loss can’t be put completely on McKenna. The Coyotes recorded an NHL-low five shots on Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov in two periods, including zero shots in the second.
Arizona’s Oliver Ekman-Larsson did manage to net the Coyote’s first goal (and his 17th of the season) in the first period off an assist by Lucas Lessio. Another goal in the third period by Mark Arcobello was too little, too late as the ‘Yotes fell to Colorado for the ninth time under head coach Dave Tippett.
