There is now a front-runner for the Arizona State football head coaching vacancy.

According to Arizona Sports 620's Paul Calvisi, June Jones is now the front-runner for the ASU job and an announcement could come as soon as ASU announces what bowl game they were chosen for.

Jones is considered to be a serious candidate for ASU, according to Pete Roussel.

The former Hawaii head coach has been credited for single-handedly rebuilding SMU's football program over the past three seasons and his team has been bowl-eligible since 2008. However, Jones has never posted phenomenal numbers. His teams have lost at least five games in his time at SMU.

Jones is currently the winningest coach in the University of Hawaii's history, where he posted a 76-41 record. He chose to leave the school after feeling promised improvements -- including the campus and training facilities -- were ignored.

Calvisi also tweeted that University of Southern Mississippi's Larry Fedora is currently not on ASU's shortlist.

    I don't have any issue with June Jones, he's a good coach, they could do worse. I'd just prefer Larry Fedora, he's younger and coaches defense.

    what are people expecting? ASU is not a top level program and does not want to be one. That takes money, lots of money. That takes large crowds, big time boosters and uh...money. ALl of which ASU lacks. This is no the program to bring in a top tier guy and go for it all. This is not Bama or LSU, or Florida.. This is ASU- 7 wins here, 6 wins there, Holiday Bowls and the occasional 9 or 10 win year when the conference is down. Jones fits the mold of another 5 season coach here at ASU.

    mikelkaz: If your definition of good is mediocre record and rare bowl appearances, then Jones fits that definition. BUT even with that definition, Erickson is a GREAT coach with a better all time winning record and actually won some NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! So again, why are we moving backwards in our HC search when we have more money to offer?

    Jarrod P.: Yes, there are difficulties here in AZ: pro competion, a large population who move here and have other alma maters; and with our recent record. But ASU used to be a great program and they have had good runs here and there since. ASU needs to get a good quality HC (better than Jones) and post three winning seasons in a row and a few bowl appearances and then we will be back, because once you start winning, it keeps going (see Oregon for example). So please, don't hire another mediocre HC.

    JARROD P, ASU may not be LSU or BAMA but no one is. ASU can be very competitve and has alot to offer. We do get top tier recruits but getting Jones will push us back. Lisa Love needs to step back and think about this. Once Stanford loses Luck they will go back to where they were, garbage! I believe we can keep up with SC and they are losing scholarships. If we hire Jones, we as well be under NCAA sanctions.

    ASU June Jones haters don't be cry babies! June Jones kicked your butts and totally dominated you with very little talent. You folks in the mainland need to understand June Jones had nothing to work with and no money and no facilities! He took a team with a low budget to the promise land a BCS bowl game! Heller so what if he lost geeze look what he did! He gave UH National recognition! Hehehe Bottom line ASU has a huge budget and Hawaii is such a smaller school and June Jones did it and put UH on the map! Don't forget what he did to you folks in the Christmas Bowl!

    First off, June Jones is not a successful HC. Turning around SMU, are you kidding. He has a losing record there. Winning at Hawaii is supposed to be having success lol This is pure crap and distorted reporting. Call it like you see it, this a 60 year old washed up coach. I hate to be mean about the guy, but he is not ASU material. We mine as well hirer him and drop down to the WAC or MWC, we don't deserve to be in the Pac with this hirer. Kirby Smart, Brent Venables, Larry Fedora, Mark Helfrich...what's wrong with those guys.
