UPDATE: Backlash causes ASU to turn away from June Jones. He will no longer be a candidate for the job. Read more here

It's June in December.

Arizona Sports 620's John Gambadoro reports ASU is set to hire June Jones as head coach, adding "look for a press conference Thursday or Friday."

The decision to hire Jones, according to Arizona Sports 620's Paul Calvisi, was reached late Tuesday night.

Jones, 58, spent the last four years at Southern Methodist University, leading the Mustangs to a 23-28 mark. Prior to that he went 76-41 at Hawaii.

An offensive-minded coach, Jones is known for using a pass-heavy offense. He takes over a program that many thought underachieved the last few seasons, though scoring points was not really the problem this past year.

At any rate, Jones will take over for the fired Dennis Erickson, and like the man he replaced, also has a history in the NFL.

Jones coached the Atlanta Falcons from 1994-96, guiding them to a 19-29 record and one playoff appearance, and was also the interim coach for the San Diego Chargers in 1998, going 3-7.

Jones' name was first linked to the ASU job over the weekend, but that idea seemed to cool down and the coach allegedly told his team and staff at SMU that he was staying.

Jones is expected to bring recruiting coordinator Adrian Klemm with him.

    Really?
A 23-28 coach is the best ASU could get? what a commitment to winning. I bet Crow had Lisa Love on a short leash money-wise and this is all we could afford. Way to underachieve yet once again Sun Devils...

    Disappointing...
All the names out there and this is who we settle on? Sometimes I wonder if ASU is testing my allegiance to the team and school, I truly hope he proves the lot of us wrong and is successful but with recent hirings at Arizona, Washington State this is disappointing to say the least.

    More of the Same
Look at the similarities between Jones now and Erickson five years ago and you've got the same person. Looks like another long stretch of mediocrity for the Sun Devils.

    Baffling
June Jones, who is that? That is what recruits will say. Not saying that he is a bad coach, but I think he doesn't come at a cheap price. I really think ASU is still going to have problems competing for offensive players, even though he is an offensive coach. I was hoping for a defensive minded coach who could come in here, instill discipline, and give ASU a chance to separate itself from all the other PAC 12 teams in recruiting. This is a sad day for ASU football. A school as big as ASU should have made a bigger higher than this.

    Are You Kidding Me!
I wanted to see coach E gone as much as the next fan, but I would have rather keep him for another year than be the laughing stock of pac-12 schools. I cannot believe this was the best they could do, someone that has a loosing record just about everywhere he has coached...Can you say TRAIN WRECK?

    Terrible
This is a terrible feeling, worse than losing to U of A this year. With all of the coaches available, and the University understanding the fan/booster disdain for Jones...they're still going to pull the trigger. If anyone's interested in 4 season tickets, row 15 on the 50 they'll be available next year.

    Solid Hire
Even though he only went 23-28 at SMU, they were a horrible program and had not been to a bowl game in 15 years before he took over. The same with Hawaii - They had not been to a bowl game for 7 years before he took over. He took Hawaii of all schools to a BCS bowl game. He is not a flashy name, but he seems to know how to win right away and recruit well. His age might be a limiting factor, but that doesn't bother me.

Love and Crow need to go!
This is a joke. Right? June Jones another coach on the back side of his career to take over the program. ASU will give him a five year contract like Erickson and he will be as old as Erickson when the contract is up. So what has changed? Nothing! Stupid is what stupid does. Lisa Love needs to go away, far, far away. ASU needs an enema and I know right where to insert it. The athletic Department.
