Report: Osweiler declaring for NFL Draft on Friday

Brock Osweiler had a record-setting season for the Arizona State Sun Devils.

He became the first ASU quarterback to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season, while passing for 26 touchdowns for the 6-7 Devils.

Following a 56-24 loss to Boise State in the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas last month, an emotional Osweiler spoke to the media about his offensive coordinator, Noel Mazzone, taking a job on Jim L. Mora's staff at UCLA. Mazzone was not retained by newly-hired ASU coach Todd Graham.

That led to a thread of rumors that Osweiler would bolt ASU to reunite with Mazzone in Westwood for his senior season. The reality that Osweiler would still have to sit out a year after an in-conference transfer poured a bucket of cold water on those rumors.

But the latest strong rumors have Osweiler foregoing his senior season to enter the NFL Draft.

DevilsDigest.com is reporting that Osweiler's time at Arizona State is over.

Osweiler could be taking a huge risk by leaving Tempe. He's got a relatively small sample of work on his résumé (only 15 starts) and his junior year didn't exactly finish on a high note.

And not to diminish his 2011 accomplishments, let's remember that if not for a career-ending concussion suffered by Steven Threet in November of 2010, Osweiler would likely have been holding a clipboard this past season again.

Should Osweiler opt for the draft, that would leave Graham with three quarterbacks on his roster. Sophomore Mike Bercovici was Osweiler's understudy in 2011, and threw three passes. Taylor Kelly will be a redshirt sophomore next season, and he's got 4 attempts to his credit.

And there's redshirt freshman-to-be Michael Eubank, a highly recruited dual-threat QB from Centennial High in Corona, California. Eubank chose ASU in December of 2010, and stuck to his commitment despite a late recruiting push from Pittsburgh while Graham was the head coach of the Panthers.

If Brock cannot transition through a coaching change in college, NO WAY can he do it in the NFL. Should have left for UCLA and Noel Mazzone, since he did cry when he left. Congrats on your 4th round draft selection, Brock, and don't ever mention you were a Sun Devil. Just say you are from Montana.

Brock doesn't need another year of college to prove he's a scrub, go pro and get paid for it like all the other ASU QB's have done!

Most likely its a good move in his part because you dont know what Graham will do, and next years team looks worse than this years team. Transfering does not make sense and teams will like what he has done, see his potential, size, athletic ability, arm strength etc while sitting behind a starter for a few years. My only problem is hes acting like a baby since Noel has left. ASU is a mess and Love needs to be fired.

Despite how the year ended, Broc still had a good year, one that got him some notice, and with all the changes at asu its hardly a sure thing that he could even repeat this years performance, let alone improve upon it next year do too many factors outside his control. Heck, I even heard speculation that even if Broc had stayed Graham might have started Eubank over Broc. I don't think Broc is a super star in the making, but I do think he could be a solid back up in this league, and that his stock is probably as high as its going to get, so I believe he's making the right move.

Most teams shy away from taller quarter backs. And he has awful mechanics. I wonder if at 6-8 (or whatever he's listed at) and as athletic as he is, if he might have a better chance of sticking in the nfl as a TE or WR. Thoughts?

As long as Love and Crowe run the show. ASU will always be the land of scrubs... Lets see how they do with 1o,ooo at their football games. If graham doesn't win it will be 5,ooo by the end of season.

U of A QB's aren't holding press conferences about their under-achieving. They're satisfied kickin ASU around the field so they really don't worry about turning pro.

He's no better than a 4th round pick, and I don't think one more year at ASU would have increased his stock. He will need to check his emotions at the door in the NFL. He can't break a contract the first time a coach he likes is fired.
