The Arizona State Sun Devils had hoped to wear their black uniforms against rival Arizona, who donned all red last Friday for the Duel in the Desert.

When ASU heard Arizona's uniform choice, the Sun Devils decided they, too, wanted to wear the uniforms they felt would leave a lasting impression on audiences across the country.

"[Arizona] decided to wear all red and it's a national TV game and ESPN is showing it nationwide," ASU athletic director Steve Patterson told Arizona Sports 620's Doug & Wolf Tuesday. "So, we thought what's our best looking uniforms? The black ones."

But the Devils' request was flat out denied.

"We called down there to ask permission because the home team gets the right to approve it or not to approve it," Patterson said. "It wasn't like we called down and asked to wear maroon while they are wearing red and we got turned down."

Apparently, according to Patterson, the decision made Pac-12 history.

"According to the folks at the conference, they've never, ever heard of that happening before," Patterson said.

The Devils got the last laugh, however, when they beat the Wildcats on their home turf to recapture the coveted Territorial Cup.

laughs best. Leave it to the Cats to pull a bush league move like this. I thought the black white combo of ASU was tight.

    Patterson is nuts
The NCAA rule states that the visiting team will wear white. The rule also specifies that the jerseys shall have sufficient contrast. A color blind player would see cardinal red and black as the same color. 8% of men are color blind. Also, there was a jersey flap in the 1982 UA-ASU game when the 'Cats wanted to wear white and ASU refused. Arizona proceeded to knock ASU out of the Rose Bowl 28-18. Patterson needs to learn the history of the Territorial Cup and familiarize himself with the NCAA rulebook.

    Stick with school colors
The visiting team should where their white away uniforms. ASU needs to stick with the Maroon and Gold, the SCHOOL COLORS. The black-out NIKE drvien unifroms are ugly. Get rid of the helmets too. Go back to the classic colors. Seems to be working for Alabama and other big-time schools.

    short sighted of UA
I think they denied it because they wanted to have their "red out" be the show......well that worked out well for them.....oh wait.... UCLA and USC have been doing the home and home colors during their rivalry game and it looks awesome.

It was kind of childish for UA to not allow the all black uni's but like Fred, I really don't like all the new color schemes, logos and designs (I honestly don't know what the kids see in those Oregon uni combo's... yuk).

It didn't look much like ASU vs U of A, all uniforms were sharp though.

Here is the NCAA rules ASU could hav worn Black
Visiting Team Jerseys NCAA rules state that the visiting team must wear white jerseys. The color of the numbers for the visiting team’s jerseys has to be different from that of the home team. Visiting teams may only wear colored jerseys to away games if both teams agree in writing to wearing colored jerseys for that particular game. The home team’s respective conference must also officially certify that the visiting team’s jersey colors contrast with the home team’s jersey colors
