With the 2012 college football season in the books, it's never too soon to examine the top programs in the country heading into 2013.

Athlonsports.com got a head start and came out with its top 25 rankings for the upcoming college football season.

And sure enough, Arizona State made the list.

The Sun Devils are ranked No. 24, as one of five Pac-12 schools amongst the top in the country.

A two-point loss to UCLA in late October was all that separated Arizona State from a berth in the Pac-12 Championship this season. And with most of the core returning for 2013, Todd Graham's team should make a run at UCLA for the No. 1 spot in the South Division. The Sun Devils will need to find new weapons at receiver for quarterback Taylor Kelly, but sophomore running back DJ Foster is ready for a breakout campaign. The defense received good news when tackle (and likely All-American) Will Sutton returned to Tempe for his senior year. Arizona State catches a huge break in scheduling, as it misses Oregon in crossover play and hosts USC, Washington, Oregon State and Arizona - all crucial swing games for Pac-12 positioning.

Being a field goal away from a Pac-12 Championship appearance will linger in the minds of the returning Sun Devils, and a top ranking -- even if it is this early -- appears better than the perspective of the Sun Devils prior to the 2012 campaign.

After an over-achieving first season for ASU, coach Todd Graham is pleased to have Sutton, along with his core players, returning for 2013.

However, if early rankings are any indication, Graham and his Sun Devils will enter 2013 with high expectations.

    Waaayyyy Too Early
Nice to hear that someone (never heard of Athlon sports) is ranking ASU FB for next season but c'mon.... it's way too early for that. And really, even if this was August, are pre-season polls/rankings worth much?

    I agree, still confused?
So Arizona beats Oklahoma State, loses by a field goal to Oregon State and in OT at Stanford. They also played Oregon much better on the road than ASU did in Tempe. They have the leading rusher in the country returning and lots of young talent at QB. And no love? So ASU barely loses to UCLA, at home, and that is their big plus? UCLA ended the year losing three in a row and their big win against USC doesn't look so big anymore. I agree that way too early and mostly kidding about the UofA not being ranked, but still kind of silly.

    One more thing
I know it's all cyclical, but how did ASU miss Stanford last year and misses Oregon this upcoming season??? :)

If you mean losing to Oregon 49 to ZERO is playing Oregon better than ASU did, we know all we need to know about your football knowledge. Also ASU loses to UCLA by a FG and U of A loses 66-10. Wait for it...and best of all ASU beats you at home and you're still wondering why you aren't getting much LOVE. Think about it....ASU is just better

    Zona with QB talent?
Phoenix Kitty Cat, you're smoking something if you think the Cats have QB talent in 2013. Year of the Sun Devil pal!

    Football Knowledge
Questioning my football knowledge? You beat two teams with records over .500, us and Navy. Congrats on AZ, we gave it away and you capitalized. We were down to Oregon 13-0 at the half, they came back out and scored two defensive TDs. They could have sent their first two strings home after a quarter and a half in Tempe. So be proud of beating AZ and a JC team in Navy, well done. And by the way, we have a QB coming in who simply dominated for four years in HS and a solid kid who was very proficient in a game this year. Won't be Scott, but we can get by with our running game for a while.

You honestly think a true freshman is going to come in for you and have as good of a season as Taylor Kelly next year? C'mon, man. Any non-delusional UofA fan (there are very few) knows that they are going to take a step back next year. UA had eight home games this year, do you realize how many road games that translates to next year? Your QB is gone, your RB is in jail, your overall quality of play slipped towards the end of the year (barely beating Nevada), and your defense is horrible. One recruiting class will not fix that defense, it will likely be worse next year than it was this year.

Yet UofA supposed big win, was against USC too. You also didn't score a point against Oregon, so I don't know where your getting that comparison from. And we beat you guys too. So..........
