The Arizona State Sun Devils have given their mascot a face lift.

In a press conference Friday, the school unveiled a new 'Sparky'.

According to the school, the newly designed mascot will be used in a variety of applications and is meant to appeal to a younger audience. A press release states you can expect to see the new Sparky in comic books, children's books and animated productions.

The new-look Sparky will make his first athletic appearence at ASU's spring football game in April.

The "old" Sparky is not being replaced, however, as the university will continue to use it on merchandise and in other areas.

The design was a collaborative effort between the school and Disney.

    Ugly! This skinnier Sparky is So Scary looking. I don't think I would buy the stuff sparky for my grand kids.

    I was "OK" with the new pitchfork logo (didn't hate it, didn't love it) and the way they de-emphasized Sparky on the uni's but this sucks. What is ASU trying to do, eliminate all visual reminders of Sun Devil history? Someone please tell me what was wrong with the old Sparky??

    Apparently the old Sparky didn't bring in enough moola for ASU. They need some revenue for licensing and of course movie deals. Forget that this is an institution of higher learning, it all about the bucks.

    This reminds me of the time that Warner Brothers tried to update the Looney Tunes and they ended up reverting back to the old characters because of the backlash. Maybe we'll get lucky and the same thing will happen. I love the new uniforms and the pitchfork, but not this.

    I'm a Sun Devil for life but that is an absolutely awful redesign of an icon that I've loved since knee-high to a grasshopper. The eyes and plastic smile make him look like he's on on LSD. Any intimidation or mischief that Sparky is supposed to represent when leading our team to fight will only be met with laughter from our opponents.

    What makes matters worse is that an entire committee of people had to give this the green light in order for it to come to fruition. I loved the new logo and was enjoying the direction that the school was going while trying to make it a more marketable school for top students and athletes to attend but now I'm embarrassed to be associated ASU if this is what they truly envision for the future.

    I hope the big brass at ASU are reading these comments. This is a joke. This makes it look like we have an identity crisis. The other PAC 12 teams are probably laughing their butts off.
