You probably already know that REM got the title to the song, "What's The Frequency, Kenneth" from Dan Rather's account of his mugging in 1986. His attackers kept repeating a version of that phrase as they beat him. But, did you know that another attack took place while recording the song? And it was captured on tape!
While REM was recording, bassist, Mike Mills was suffering an appendicitis attack. On the original recording, you can even hear Mike slowing down just a bit as his pain was increasing, but he kept on plucking.
When the song was over, he was rushed to the hospital.
The appendix was a lost cause, but they kept the take and the song was the first ever to debut at No. 1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Charts in September of 1994.
