Expectations are high for quarterback Anu Solomon and the Arizona Wildcats following a breakout season in 2014.
Solomon, one of the top returning starting quarterbacks, was one of 30 quarterbacks named to the Manning Award preseason watch list last week.
He is also one of four Pac-12 signal-callers to be receive the preseason recognition. ESPN.com Pac-12 blogger Chantel Jennings broke down each of the four quarterbacks, including Solomon.
4. Anu Solomon, Arizona: Tucson.com had a full rundown of Arizona’s quarterback situation. Of Solomon it said: “The coaches saw plenty to like in terms of the passing game and Solomon’s decision making. If he can continue to improve on the decision making he was showing in the first half of the season, it would be a welcome development for the Wildcats.” One thing Solomon has going his way is the number of returning offensive playmakers. Running back Nick Wilson will be ready to take on more this season as a sophomore and his stable of wide receivers is “filled with size, speed and dependability.”
Solomon threw for 3,793 yards and 28 touchdowns with nine interceptions in his first season as a starter in 2014. He also led the Wildcats to their first Pac-12 South title and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl.
The other three Pac-12 quarterbacks included were Cal’s Jared Goff, Stanford’s Kevin Hogan and USC’s Cody Kessler.
The Manning Award is awarded to the nation’s top quarterback, but unlike other awards, is voted after the bowls.
