PORTLAND, Ore. — Cory McCaffrey ran for 222 yards and four touchdowns as Portland State held on for a 31-29 victory over Northern Arizona on Saturday night.
Northern Arizona had a chance to win in the final 10 seconds, but Matt Myers' 41-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. That allowed the Vikings (2-0, 1-0 Big Sky) to snap a four-game losing streak to the Lumberjacks (1-2, 0-1).
Despite the close score, Portland State never trailed in the game, thanks in big part to McCaffrey, who now has seven touchdowns for the season. But Northern Arizona made it interesting with a fourth-quarter comeback.
McCaffrey picked up almost all of his yards by the 6:18 mark of the third quarter, when he ran for his fourth touchdown to put the Vikings ahead 31-17.
The Lumberjacks cut that deficit to 31-20 when Myers connected on a 48-yard field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced over with 1:46 left in the quarter. Myers added another field goal, this one from 25 yards, with 12:03 left in the game to trim Portland State's lead to 31-23.
After an exchange of interceptions, Northern Arizona narrowed the gap to 31-29 when Zach Bauman barreled over the goal line from one yard out with 3:22 left. The Lumberjacks then went for two-points to tie the game but Cary Grossart's pass was knocked out of Khalil Paden's hands in the back of the end zone.
Northern Arizona still had one more chance after holding Portland State on downs with 54 seconds left. Grossart drove the Lumberjacks to the Vikings' 24 before turning his team's fate over to Myers. But the potential winning field goal was hooked to the left.
The loss spoiled a solid effort by Grossart, who completed 19 of 33 passes for 323 yards and a touchdown.
