Paul Calvisi is wrong.

My co-host on Sports Interactive likes to say "it can always get worse."

Against their division rival, in a game that both teams have pointed to since August, on the second biggest stage in the sport, the Arizona Cardinals laid down and had their tummies scratched. I defy anyone to tell me how it can get worse than what I just saw.

How does it get worse than a 27-6 loss at home to a Frank-Gore-less San Francisco 49er team?

3-13? How is that worse? That's a high draft pick, a potential franchise QB waiting to happen. In my book that's an upgrade.

How does it get worse than a quarterback yukkin' it up on the sideline in the 4th quarter? Hey Derek, you don't need a media hack like me to remind you that perception is reality. I'm sure it was a harmless joke. A moment of levity needed after a bad night at the office. But some of the fans and media don't want levity. They want to know you're as angry about it as they are. That it matters to you. When you laugh during the game, then get all huffy during your postgame press conference it gives off a heavy vibe that you don't. Maybe that's not fair but it's the truth.

Clearly, there was nothing to laugh about. The Cardinals should be embarrassed by their play on Monday night. I'm not talking about the losing-on-the-road-to-the-Falcons embarrassed. It goes deeper than that.

Forget the dwindling playoff hopes before the game started, this contest was about pride. It was about showing your fans, a national audience, and more importantly yourselves that there is something here to be salvaged. That in a season of failed expectations you still have enough pride to go beat that team. Your so-called rival with the tenuous head coach, the cast-off quarterback, the barely used running back and their own set of demons that have haunted them all year.

And, oh yeah, a win puts you a game out of first in the division.

All of those reasons to play harder than you have all year and instead you looked as soft as a fleece blanket. And that's the part that has to leave Ken Whisenhunt scarred. This team knew exactly what was in front of them Monday night. There was nothing to sell to the players; a game like this sells itself. It was a true test of their character.

Like most of the tests put before this team, they failed.

It can always get worse? No. It can't.

It was you who got DA going post game, Burns?
HAHAHAHA! FYI- I'm not a DA fan. Unfortunately the Cards are my home team. I wish I was born and grew up in Pittsburg so that the Steelers would be my home team. Before Whiz finds his own job in jeopardy, he should fire Billy Davis. Currenly, this defense is a 4-3 not 3-4. Porter and Haggans suck! I say put Washington, Hayes, and Lennon as your 3 LB's and whoever at DL. Good god! It doesnt get worst than last night.

    Very hard to watch!
We got beat in the trenches!!! O line could not create anything and the D line could not stop a thing! Special teams played horrific! Before my boys and i walked in the stadium last night, we were convinced that the Cards were going to make the 49ers look like a beaten down "hasbeen" team and send them back to the Bay area with theirs butts kicked and sore!! Very hard game to watch last night. Lots of work to be done going forward! Go Cards!!

    THE UPSIDE?
The upside to what potentially could be a 3-13 season is a high draft position. The question is what GM Rod Graves and Coach Whiz can do with it. They have to draft a QB in the first round and he's got to be ready to start ASAP, see Sanchez Jets and Bradford Rams. Get that pick wrong and the Cards will be set back for years.

    Burns
I now live in Charlotte, NC. Used to live in Phx for years...Dave Burns sucks, reminds me of the loud office guy that loves sports, but brings nothing else to the table. If that was Burns that DA ripped, that is classic. DA over reacted for sure, but what a typical local media guy question, and to keep on about it. So annoying. I wish DA would have went Jim Everette vs Jim Rome on him. Burns always will be a local hack at best.

    Burns
I wrote a post that painted Burns in a negative light, and noticed it didn't make the board, seriously? Go to any other city and they welcome all comments as long as there isn't ant bad language, etc. Weak!!!

    You're an Idiot
Burns is just calling a turd a turd. DA stinks. The biggest problem is that this was known before he came here and the Cards (Coach Wiz) placed all of their hopes on him. You obviously don't know that DB is usually one of the most insightful radio personalities on the air. It wasn't him that asked, but that's irrelevent because the question was valid. If nothing else, DA should have kept his helmet on in shame. Now put your comb in your back pocket and go watch re-runs of NASCAR.

I hate NASCAR-I relocated here for a job in the banking industry. Burns sucks, the Cardinals suck, and DA sucks. I lived in PHX for 20 years, and know the radio talk talent in that market well... he is a local hack. No better here..the Panthers! No worries on calling me an idiot, No offense taken.
