"Regarding today's developments and our quarterback position, acquiring Peyton Manning is no longer an option for us."

With those words Friday, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt effectively put an end to the team's pursuit of Peyton Manning, ending months of speculation and a week's worth of effort to land the future Hall of Fame QB.

The Cards bowed out of the Manning sweepstakes largely because of a roster bonus due to Kevin Kolb, a contract stipulation that forced the Cardinals to make a decision - one way or another - by Friday afternoon: either pick up the option and keep Kolb, or cut him loose and hope for the best with Manning.

They made their choice, and it was to stick with the QB they acquired last summer.

This is a QB who completed 57.7 percent of his passes and threw for just nine touchdowns in his first season in the Valley. A QB who played in only nine games due to various injuries.

A QB who the Cardinals decided they couldn't lose on the hope they'd be able to convince Peyton Manning to come to Arizona.

So now Manning will be leading some other team, likely the Broncos, and the Cardinals will lick their wounds and head into the season with Kolb and John Skelton.

The prospect doesn't faze Whisenhunt, not in the least.

"We sit here today in the same spot we were heading into the offseason," he said. "That's with two experienced quarterbacks who have both demonstrated positive things in the past and who we feel good about."

The decision to stop going after Manning, though, was not about what the team has in Skelton. If Whisenhunt truly believed the Fordham product was capable of being the starter, the team would have saved some money and given Kolb the boot.

That they didn't is a sign that, while the team may like Skelton, they still believe in Kolb - at least to the point where they were too afraid to lose him just for a slim chance at landing Manning.

And now it's up to Kolb to justify that belief.

The 27-year-old will have a full offseason with the team, with a chance to learn the playbook and work on familiarizing himself with his receivers, as well as a upgraded revamped offensive line.

What he won't have is any more excuses.

If Kevin Kolb fails, it won't be due to a lack of effort. He's proven to be a tireless worker and solid leader though, as my colleague Vince Marotta points out, he may be a little miffed at the team's effort to replace him.

At any rate, Kolb, first and foremost, must stay healthy. Quarterbacks who miss half a season due to injury are of little use to a team, no matter how talented they are. And then, if on the field, he must outperform Skelton, who will have every chance to win the starting job outright this summer.

For Kolb's sake, he better win the job and open the season under center.

The Cardinals could not continue in the race for Peyton Manning because it would have cost them Kevin Kolb. They may not have come out on top, but they wouldn't have excused themselves from contention, either, had it not been for Kolb's bonus. Now it's up to Kolb to not only prove they made the right call, but also prove that he has a future as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

This is his team. It may be his last chance.

He should be ready to prove to everyone what he is. Kolb should take this to heart and play like a real NFL starter. (This year will be his last chance) I know nobody agrees with me but I'm glad we didn't get Manning. I think once Kolb has a year in the system he will shine. I also believe he is better than most thinks. I like Kolb and I'm glad we kept him on the team..........

    Choice? Thats cute, Adam
PM chose not to go to the Cards. Lets not blur the lines here. Kolb is the consolation prize. I think he has got some talent and potential, but pls dont act like the Cards 'Chose' between Manning and Kolb, that's silly. They have plenty of cash. I personally want the team to trade him, cuz watching a mediocre team is not worth my time. I can watch mediocrity, daily, all around me. I am interested in superiority, watching the best of the best, seeing teams 'create' something special. And, everybody but a few ignorant fans and Cards Mgmt KNOW that Kolb 'aint nothin special'!!!

If Kevin Kolb flounders in 2012 for whatever reason, it won't possibly be his last chance, it will DEFINITELY be his last chance!

SF was superior last year. They signed Moss and Manningham. Now, they're even more superior. If that lures in PM... They'll be. They'll be. They'll be empire superior. What is AZ sitting back and waiting for? How are they going to cover 2 pro bowl WRs and a pro bowl TE? How are they going to to stop a pro bowl RB? Stack the box? How r they gna stack the box and cover Davis, Moss, and Manningham? Keep in mind Crabtree, Williams, and Ginn are emerging young WRs. Same ole cards bro, same ole cards....

Not to mention we also need a probowl calibur type Reciever to free Fitz from double coverage... We now need very good coverage CBs and LBs. All I have to say is that AZ effort to improve their team via FA SUCKS.

    Scared of Moss & Manningham?
That's hilarious! Moss was on three teams in a single year and has been out of football for a year. He's a shadow of his former self. And who are the 2 Pro Bowl WRs? Manningham has never made a Pro Bowl. Ginn an "emerging young WR"? He's been in the league 5 seasons and hasn't "emerged" yet. And Crabtree was barely better than Roberts last year despite being their top target. Could you be any more of a chicken little?

    NFC WEST CHAMPIONS
As a ignorant fan I do believe the Cardinals did say that they wouldn't be making to many changes this year. Why should they go all out in free agency when they can pick up who they need this year in the draft. SF was far from superior last year and the Cardinals don't have plenty of cash. Also the Cardinals did not choose Kolb over Manning but I'm glad it turned out the way it did. The Cardinals will win the west this year just wait and see........

I just commented that I want 1)Cards to trade Kolb and get a real QB. The Manningham/Moss signings are great for Arizona, they are sad receivers. 2)Cards were at cap before Brown rel ($17m) and (guess/value) resigned ($5-6M). Kolb restructured ($11 vs $5M). Stuckey/Hadnot released ($3-4M) And, there are several other players being let go shortly. They have about $15M + $7M they can roll over from last year (since they were under the cap). That is, plenty of cash. To someone elses point, my guess on Browns value is spec. If the Cards signed for more-that would be stupid!

You either don't know what you are doing or you flat out don't research before you write! Manning told the Cards "Thanks but No Thanks"! Not the other way around.
