Ken Whisenhunt's first game as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals came in a loss to the 49ers in San Francisco.

Did his final game with the club come with the same result against the same team in the same place?

Arizona falling in its season finale by a score of 27-13 Sunday was in no way a surprise.

Hell, the team finishing the season with a 5-11 mark isn't that surprising, especially when you figure eight of 12 Arizona Sports 620 personalities pegged the Cardinals to finish with six or fewer wins this season.

Six times since moving to Arizona have the Cardinals finished a season 5-11, and six more times have they finished a game or two worse than that. Yet, this 5-11 season feels worse than any of those.

The 2012 Cardinals started the season with a 4-0 record.

The 2012 Cardinals have a playoff-caliber defense.

The 2012 Cardinals have talented players dotted all throughout the roster.

None of that mattered.

The 2012 Cardinals are as big of a mess as any previous iteration, with a league-worst offense and a handful of veteran leaders and key players finding their way into Whisenhunt's doghouse.

Adrian Wilson and Darnell Dockett both caught Whisenhunt's ire this season for different reasons, as did John Skelton and Beanie Wells.

Whether it was from mouthing off like Wells, ineffective play like Wilson and Skelton, or for whatever it was Dockett actually did in New York, the fact is the coach tried to send a message via his most important players.

It didn't work as the mistakes, poor play and losses continued.

In fact, nothing Whisenhunt did this year worked, and it's why the Cardinals, for the second time in three years, finished a season with just five wins, which just so happens to be, according to ESPN Stats & Info, a record in futility.

"We just got to continue to get some guys back healthy, continue to eliminate mistakes and we can be a good football team," Whisenhunt told the Arizona Cardinals radio network after the final loss of the season.

If only it was that simple, because it obviously is not.

Every team has injuries and every player makes mistakes.

But most teams don't suffer the type of season-crippling losing streaks the Cardinals have.

So now the Cardinals have some decisions to make, and they're likely to be made by the time 2013 arrives. The direction the franchise chooses to go will have ramifications for many years to come.

Keep Whisenhunt -- on a one-year deal, no less -- and risk losing defensive coordinator Ray Horton to another team. Also say goodbye to the likes of Dockett, Wells and probably Wilson.

Part with the coach of the last six years, though, and take a risk that you can't actually do better than the only man to ever lead the organization to the Super Bowl.

Can the Cardinals do better than Whisenhunt? We don't know the answer to that question.

What we do know, however, is Whisenhunt has a 45-51 record in Arizona, and has compiled a mark of 18-30 in the three years since Kurt Warner retired. In that time not only have the Cardinals lost their fair share of games, but they've also lost considerable ground in the NFC West.

San Francisco? Better.

Seattle? Better.

St. Louis? Better.

A common thread among the three teams who finished ahead of Arizona in division this season is that each hired a new coach in the time since the Cardinals last finished at the top.

The Cardinals should not only take note, but also follow suit.

    QB driven leauge
I agree with whoever posted: "even good HC's dont have success if they dont have a good QB". But me being critical says that the Cards went about the QB situation and the O Line situation in the wrong way. They have been going with dead weight FA's and late drafted talentless picks for both situations and its really all their fault. Whether its being cheap or misjudging talent, its all their faults. Hopefully they learn their lesson from this.

    The right way
in a interview I saw last night with Mike Shannahan he said of Dan Snyder "If he wants a winning team in 3 years I (Shanahan) am not the man for the job. That is not the right way to rebuild a team. I (Shanahan) need at least 5 years to do it the right way". So maybe the rational behind Management and Coaching failures is Ownerships pressure for immediate success? Maybe its on us the fans with our "WE WANT IT NOW!" mentality. It sucks because its gna take at least 5 yrs for the rebuilding to pay dividends AND our core players right now are gna be over the hill or not even here.

    broken record
Players come and go, coaches come and go, but the Bidwells, well, they just wont go away. I want the owners to take some responsibility here. They are the ones that havent put a real contender in this state. When is Mikey going to come out and say, it was his fault. He is the leader, it his his responsibility. I will change my perspective on the org when Bidwell Inc, takes responsibility, owns it, and changes its ways. Otherwise, same ole Cards!

    Is there any way to
..hire a new owner? We seem to have come full circle. This is reminiscent of the old Cards. The common thread is the lousy genetic line of Bidwills.

Let stop using the Bidwell excuse
First of all, Michael Bidwell calls the shots, and actually has a desire to win, and is light years better then his old man. Second, the Cards are spending the money, they are not the cheap team that they were 10 years ago.Third, they aren't going anywhere so don't waste your breath.

    Whiz
Whiz can't evaluate QB talent to save his life. Whiz also does a poor job of developing young talent. There are a lot of viable HC candidates out there right now (Andy Reid, Lovie Smith, Ray Horton, Chip Kelly, Bill O-Brien to name a few). Now is the time to take action and move on from Whiz. No way that you can keep Whiz with all of the personnel power he has. He's not going to give that up willingly.

    GOOD, BAD, UGLY
GOOD Ray Horton was very good, improved Dee. Young good talent. BAD Russ Grim..The offensive play starts with the O-line, without a good O-line you cant run, without runs you can't effectively play action pass and you can't keep the dee honest. Without o-line play you can't call offensive plays effectively. UGLY Coach Whiz final say on 53 man roster and coaching staff. Mishandled his QB's for the last 3 years, Leinart, Anderson, Max Hall, Skelton, Kolb, Lindley.

    Wrong 7901
They are not spending money. Fitz was paid $17M a year for one big reason. He sells tickets and sells jerseys. That is not spending, it is investing. Its about ROI for the Bidwells and 40 years of failure to prove it! Dude (sundevil7901), you must be an employee, cause no one is that stupid to support the Cards ownership. Correct, they arent the same CHEAP as they were, they are a different kind of CHEAP. They dont put money where it matters for wins, which is in the trenches and behind center. Not at the WR position. How did it work for the Lions? Cards?...need I continue?

Perhaps 'stupid' is too strong a term
As i sit and think about it. Perhaps thinking that fans are 'stupid' for thinkng Bidwell Inc, gives a toot about wins, is a bit strong. Maybe, 'FOOLISH' is a better term. It is less pointed. It also implies that fans are unaware how things work and it doesnt imply judgment of ones brain capacity. It also supports the fact that fans continue to buy tickets to watch a pathetic product and then defend it. Yup, i officially apologize for using the word, 'stupid', and would like to formally change my word choice to 'FOOLISH'!

I'm not saying that, historically, the Bidwells haven't run this organization poorly. But, to say in 2012, that the Bidwells are just being cheap and don't want to win, is a cop-out. It sure is easy to say after the fact how they should have spent their money. Signing Whiz to an extension after his early success doesn't show a desire to win, sure. And paying big bucks for Kolb, right or wrong, doesn't indicate a desire to win, right? And let's just ignore the money they've spent on defense.
