McKissic’s career high not enough as Oregon tops ASU in overtime: By the Numbers

Shaquielle McKissic continued to emerge as leader of Arizona State’s basketball team, but the group wasn’t able to pull off a victory at home against Oregon on Friday.

It was a thrilling contest as the lead changed hands several times, especially in the second half.

Oregon looked to be in good position for a win in the closing minute of the second period. However, McKissic dribbled frantically around the top of the arc before finding some daylight on the left wing and drilling a three-pointer with about a second left in the half.

The senior forward’s desperation heave tied the game at 60, and the two schools ended up going into overtime.

ASU forward Jonathan Gilling was scoreless before hitting a three in the extra period, but the visiting Ducks forced a Bo Barnes airball on the final possession, holding on for a 68-67 win.

The Sun Devils fell back to .500 (11-11) on the season, while Oregon improved to 15-7 overall and 5-4 in Pac-12 play. ASU had won four of its last five at home and three of its previous four overall before falling in overtime.

Here’s a look at Friday night’s thriller at Wells Fargo Arena, by the numbers:

1

Arizona State had only one block in the game, which came from the hand of McKissic in overtime, and he reached a career high in scoring on the ensuing possession. The rejection was just McKissic’s third of the year.

1-3 (part I)

Oregon claimed its first road victory of the season, and is now 1-3 on an opponent’s home floor.

1-3 (part II)

ASU finished just 1-3 against Oregon and Oregon State this season, with its only win over the two coming against the Beavers on Wednesday. The Sun Devils’ two losses to the Ducks this year have come by a combined four points.

2

Junior forward Elgin Cook led the Ducks with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, but it was his three-pointer — just his second of the year — that was nearly a dagger to the hearts of ASU. His three turned Oregon’s one-point deficit into a two-point lead with about three minutes left in the second half, and ASU never regained the lead before the end of regulation.

3

Gilling started in favor of Savon Goodman, but he went scoreless in regulation, finishing with three points after going 1-for-6 from the field and 0-for-1 from the free throw line in 31 minutes. The 6-foot-8 senior, however, led the Sun Devils with seven rebounds — all on the defensive end. Goodman, by comparison, shot 3-for-5 and finished with six points and five boards in 20 minutes.

3-6

ASU fell to 3-6 in conference play with the defeat. Last year’s team was 5-4 through nine games in the Pac-12. The Sun Devils had a chance to tie themselves with Oregon for the seventh-best conference record, but they fell to 10th while the Ducks moved past UCLA and Colorado to fifth.

14-12

The Devils started sloppily with nine turnovers in the first half. Oregon had taken seven more shots than ASU had by the intermission, and the Ducks went in with a five-point lead. ASU finished with 14 turnovers, while the visitors ended up giving the ball away 12 times. Herb Sendek’s squad actually took four more shots than the Ducks before the game was all said and done.

15

There were 15 lead changes in the tight game, including four in overtime. The score was also tied on four different occasions — including, of course, at the end of regulation.

16

Guard Tra Holder was big for the Sun Devils, notching 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with three assists and four rebounds. He was one of only two Sun Devils to reach double-figures in scoring on the evening. The 6-foot-1 freshman has scored in double-figures in two straight games and three of the last five. Unfortunately, ASU fell to 4-2 when he reaches that mark this season.

24

McKissic tied his career high in points with his incredible three-point basket late in regulation, and he added two more in overtime to make 24. He also made a career-best six three-pointers, decimating his previous personal high of three. The 6-foot-5 forward made five of his first six attempts from long range, and finished 6-for-10 from behind the line. He shot 9-for-18 from the field overall on his big night. The Sun Devils, however, fell to 8-4 when he reaches double-figures in scoring this season.

You can see McKissic’s game-tying three-pointer at about the 40-second mark in the video below.

42.6%

Both teams were hovering around 50 percent from the field at halftime, but ASU finished just 42.6 percent from the floor. The Devils weren’t much better from the free throw line, as they made just seven of 15 attempts (46.7 percent). Oregon ended the game shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.
