Los Angeles Angels' Tyler Skaggs to have Tommy John surgery

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs will have elbow ligament replacement surgery, likely sidelining him for the entire 2015 season.

The Angels announced Skaggs' decision Sunday and transferred him to the 60-day disabled list. Skaggs will have Tommy John surgery Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Skaggs is 5-5 with a 4.30 ERA in 18 starts this season for the Angels, who reacquired their former draft pick from Arizona in the offseason in a trade for slugger Mark Trumbo. He hasn't pitched since July 31 due to a partially torn ligament in his elbow.

The 23-year-old Skaggs says he chose surgery over rehabilitation because he thinks it's the best thing for his career. He says he doesn't plan to try to pitch late next season, instead coming back fresh for 2016.
