It was nice after an offseason of high-profile scandals and conference realignments to finally get to some Saturday football. While Miami and Ohio State played shorthanded this week due to suspensions and all of the remaining Big 12 teams played under a cloud of uncertainty, we did find out quite a bit about the season […]
It is now safe to look at the calendar. Yes, it is August, soon to be September, and the Arizona Diamondbacks are thisclose to winning the National League West and heading to the playoffs. But to get there Kirk Gibson is going to have to go against his better judgment and start riding his horses […]
No general manager can hit on all of his trades and free agent signings. They all make mistakes. And Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers is no exception. He swung and missed quite a few times this year. Anyone remember Juan Miranda, Armando Galarraga, Melvin Mora, Russell Branyan, Geoff Blum or Zach Duke? All moves that fans […]
They say all good things must come to an end. And such is the case for the Gambo and Ash show. After 12 years of hosting the main afternoon drive sports show here in Phoenix, the show is no longer. Management at Sports 620 KTAR decided to go in a different direction and my radio […]
Sometimes in life the decision gets made for you. The sushi place is packed, let’s go for pizza. Out of red cars? Blue it is. In both cases, if you really want sushi or really want a red car, you could go somewhere else and get it. Ultimately you ask the question. Can we live […]
It made $168 million in its first weekend. In just three days, the new – and final – Harry Potter movie made $168 million here in the U.S. and nearly a half-billion worldwide. I was actually hoping to see some folks dressed up in the Harry Potter garb when I was at my Gilbert multiplex […]
For the first time in years the Arizona Diamondbacks will be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline. But let the buyer beware in this case, because while the Diamondbacks are clearly in contention in the National League West, they are by no means a lock to make the postseason. Arizona has a stocked minor league system with a number of quality young players destined to be a part of their bright future. While many fans may say the future is now, the D-backs still have to be careful not to make a bad trade, a trade that see's them swap a young star for a rent-a-player. One such player is the Padres Heath Bell.
The internet was buzzing on Wednesday with news of a leaked “The Dark Knight Rises” Batman trailer. No surprise, the Comic-Con types are amped up like impatient toddlers on Christmas Eve. Me? I just shrugged my shoulders for you on the internet. What’s the point of eating an appetizer for a meal that’s still a […]
My task was simple: Bring the “flavor” of the All-Star Game to you. After walking around the Chase Field concourse for five minutes it wasn’t one flavor, it was the 31 flavors of Baskin Robbins. There were Red Sox jerseys, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants (lots of Giants), Brewers, Twins and, of course, the D-backs. It was […]
Cinderella has decided she'd rather get some rest.
Derek Jeter would have been the star of the show. The belle of the ball.
A major chunk of Tuesday's All Star Game broadcast would have been
devoted to him and his latest accomplishment: Membership in the
3,000 hit club.
I’m frankly getting tired of all these athletes lying to us, playing us like we are fools. The latest is Suns swingman Mickael Pietrus, who in dissing the Phoenix Suns to a French newspaper saying the only thing he cares about is winning a title. LIAR. If Pietrus really cared about winning more than anything […]
At first it seemed like a great idea. Wily Mo Pena in the Home Run Derby. Bombing back in the bigs after two years of minor league exile. Playing for the host team. Why not? It’d be a hell of a show. It even had its own Twitter hashtag, #WilyMo4Derby. So while a deserving Ian […]
Who doesn’t love a good legal thriller? A riveting courtroom drama? I’ve watched enough movies like Presumed Innocent and The Insider and TV shows like L.A. Law and The Good Wife to know that one of the staples of the courtroom drama is how the lawyers will try to pick apart a witness. Not their […]
Maybe I’m just in a surly, anti-Pittsburgh mood after hearing of a planned celebration in the Steel City for Dancing with the Stars winner Hines Ward. Or maybe I’m just being a contrarian. Tap the brakes a little bit on the talk the Cardinals should pursue Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor. To be fair, I was […]
I don’t want to be picky here. I don’t want to be that guy who is dating a super model only to complain that she has man-hands. I don’t want to be that guy who gets a free fancy steak dinner, only to complain his baked potato wasn’t twice baked. Desperate to shed the NFL […]
And with the 13th selection in the 2011 NBA draft the Phoenix Suns select ——-. Ok before we get to that pick let’s go over some scenarios because there are several players the Suns like and would be happy drafting. First and foremost they need help at power forward in the worst way. Markieff Morris […]
Got a friend, let’s call him … Craig. Craig — grumpy that he wasted nine bucks — insists that Hangover 2 was a summer blockbuster bomb. Just for fun, and to be a pain in his backside, I looked it up. A movie that was filmed on a budget of $35 million has, to date, […]
In front of us was the father who brought his three boys to the ballpark. One of them had allegedly spit in the Cold Stone ice cream that belonged to the youngest. While he pleaded his case to his dad, the accused only laughed. Next to him; a tug of war between a dad who […]
You can see it happening right before your eyes. The maturity level is at an all-time high. The game winning hits, the leadership, the commitment to playing the game the right way. It’s all happening right now for the Diamondbacks 23-year-old right fielder Justin Upton. Upton’s heroics in the 10th inning last night – a […]
When it was over, I wondered why Dirk bolted at the end of the game, once again leaving the ESPN sideline reporter with a lonely look of abandonment. I wondered if Mark Cuban would emerge from his kingdom of quiet and start acting like….Mark Cuban. I wondered what David Stern was thinking about as he […]
Unfortunately for the Dallas Mavericks if they happen to win the NBA Championship nobody outside of Big D will be talking about their success, they will be talking about the failures of the Big 3 and the Miami Heat. Not that the Mavericks will care. Winning that elusive title is all that matters and why […]
For years the Phoenix Suns have traded away draft picks in an effort to save money. The organization could have had Rajon Rondo, Rudy Fernandez, Luol Deng or Andre Iguodola, to name a few. With a head coach in Mike D’Antoni who didn’t like rookies and the ability to use draft picks to entice another […]
I have come to the conclusion that Chris Young is who he is. I no longer have the expectations of CY hitting .300 with 30 homers and 100 runs batted in. He is going to hit somewhere between .225 and .250. He is going to hit 20-plus home runs and drive in 75 to 85 […]
Is it safe for Arizona Diamondbacks fans to come out now? After spending the last three years in a metaphorical bomb shelter right out of the 1960’s Cold War, D-backs fans are starting to wonder if it’s safe to open the cellar door, breathe the air and drink the water. Walk up business during the […]
Like every spouse in America, my wife has a whole litany of habits that are, at best quirky and cute and at worst, irritating and must end immediately. I’m sure I do too…just don’t ask me what they are; I think I’m God’s gift to marriage. One of The Decision Maker’s habits is sleeping in. […]
While Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are bigger names on the Oklahoma City roster, it is becoming very evident in these NBA playoffs not only how valuable, but how good former Sun Devil James Harden is. In Thurday night’s Game 2 victory over the Mavericks, Harden had 23 points and seven rebounds, including a crucial […]
Did you see the crazy story of the Oregon woman who went into dental surgery with a regular old Oregonian accent and woke up with one that is part South African and part Irish? She has some kind of a rare condition that trigged her changed speech. One day you’re an accountant from Oregon. The […]
The NBA Draft Lottery is on Tuesday. There’s a 96 percent chance that the Suns will pick right where they are supposed to: #13. 96% is a pretty big number so I’m not going to waste a whole lot of time or invest any kind of real emotions into hoping that the Suns fate lies […]
Let me ask you a question. What did you love about Jerry Colangelo? He won you say? Well…he did and he didn’t. His Suns and D-backs teams won a lot of games over the years but if you’re getting down the brass tax (whatever that means) Jerry’s teams only won one championship. All those years, […]
