The Arizona Cardinals made a couple of trades during the offseason, sending Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Tim Hightower to Philadelphia and Washington, respectively.

The moves made sense, as the team had depth the cornerback and running back positions, and the trades were used to help fill holes the team had.

Oops.

"They traded a corner and a running back, and the two major injuries, a corner and a running back," Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro said. "It couldn't have played out any worse for the Arizona Cardinals."

Gambadoro said there is no way the Cardinals would have made the trades if they knew Ryan Williams and Greg Toler would each go down with season-ending injuries, as now the team is thin at both positions.

And, while the Cardinals should be able to find a solid running back before the regular season begins, the odds of them adding a capable cornerback are not as good.

"I was speaking with [ESPN NFL insider] Adam Schefter," Gambadoro said, "he told me, 'look, Gambo, the pickings are slim at the cornerback.'"

As it stands, the Cardinals may be able withstand their injuries because of the players who are still there.

Because, while losing Ryan Williams hurts, Beanie Wells was still expected to be the number one running back, and LaRod Stephens-Howling was going to play a role, too. On defense, the Cardinals still have Patrick Peterson, Richard Marshall and A.J. Jefferson lining up at corner.

Even if the Cardinals wanted to find another corner, Arizona Sports 620's Dave Burns doesn't think they will. A running back, yes. But not a corner.

"They're not going to find anybody worth a darn at cornerback because you don't cut decent cornerbacks in the National Football League," he said. "Look at some of the most successful defenses of the last couple of years, and what do they all have in common? It's not a great pass rush, it's the ability to defend the pass."

Having quality corners is important, something the Cardinals surely know. They traded one away because of their depth at the position, though that will be tested now.

    Here's a Tip
Anything Gambo says is generally wrong. Guys who have other teams back east as their favorite cannot look at our AZ teams in the proper light. All I saw was the Cardinals kickin the sheeit out of the Chargers on Saturday. What happened at the end was meaningless. Hightower, as much as I liked him fumbled the ball too much and DRC's ego couldn't keep up with his actual defensive skills. I'll take Peterson or Jefferson over DRC. Let's go Cards, screw NY teams.

Dale, come on man... Gambo has been out here for years. So have I. Sure, I am a Jets fan, but I spend just as much if not more time listening to Cards talk and watching this team. I was at the game Saturday and yes, they played very well. How anyone can say they would take a rookie who has made one good play over a Pro Bowler is beyond comprehension. With that said, I reiterate, I am down with OPP. I think eh will very special. Hindsight is well, hindsight. The trades were made and they were good trades. ANyoen can get injured at any time.

Hindsight is 20/20. Injuries happen in the NFL and team will have to move on and hope that Jeferson and Marshall can fill in. Of course they wouldn't do those trades had they known about the injuries. What kind of dumb comment is that. I wish I could have Gambo's job.

If you kept DRC you wouldn't have QB and you wouldn't have resigned Larry Fitz. Hightower always ran strong, but he fumbles in critical game ending situtations.... wait and see... I have to agree with 'Tennisgrandpa' when he wrote: Anything Gambo says is generally wrong

The shoulda, coulda, woulda is idiotic. DRC is not a "Pro Bowl" cornerback and was never a "shutdown" guy. He could not even cover #2 receivers (no time in the film room). Just give me a corner that keeps people in front of them and TACKLES (see Steelers, Pitt.). As far as Tim H. goes, liked him, but he is a dime a dozen in the NFL. As for the DRC trade, who wants DRC with Bartell or injured Skelton at QB? What would you need to give up now for a decent QB and who would be available? You guys all act like there is a "Good QB Tree" in the desert between here and Tucson to pick from.
