Randy Johnson last played for the Diamondbacks in 2008, and his return to Chase Field in a couple weeks to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the team's 2001 championship season may not be the last time you see him around these parts.

"I've been in touch with [Kirk Gibson] on multiple occasions this year, and even reached out to a couple of the pitchers behind closed doors," the Big Unit told Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Thursday. "Had conversations with them just to kind of have my input, so I'm not that far from getting back in the game."

Does that mean the future hall of famer will soon pursue a career in coaching, maybe with the Diamondbacks?

It would appear to be the case, because while Johnson said he's enjoying his time traveling and being somewhat away from the game, he knows where his future likely lies.

"The time will come that I'll get out to Spring Training and help these kids, or at least see if they want some help, and give my opinions and a lot of times probably just watch," he said.

Of all the players that have worn a D-backs uniform over the years, Johnson seemed like one of the least likely to end up coaching at some point.

Then again, you don't win 303 games, post a career ERA of 3.29 while striking out 4,875 hitters and tally five Cy Young awards without some sort of ability and knowledge, and at the very least it couldn't hurt to have Johnson around and teaching.

Unless, of course, he's throwing batting practice and gets a little wild.

That could hurt.

    The Big Unit
doesn't exactly strike me as the coaching type. He was never too personable in his playing days. If he could mentor the Lefty prospect Skaggs and improve him further I'm all for it!

the ones with most God given ability don't make good coaches because they don't know what it takes to really have to work for it, it just comes natural to them. how do you teach somebody something that has just come natural to you? i like charles nagy as the pitching coach... even if he did blow the world series for the tribe in 1997! but i'm not bitter or anything... :)

    Coach Unit? NOT!
Randy Johnson was a jerk to fans and to the press and to his teamates. Now he wants to be a coach. He will be a jerk at that also. The most vacant person of a personality wants to be a coach. I have heard everything now. Randy, stay where your at, the D-Backs are fine, MLB is fine. Coach Unit? I can't stop laughing. I don't care what anybody says, that's funny. Coach Unit?

    PR move baby
I actually think this is a great PR move by Johnson as well as the D-Backs. It would be nice since he is a first ballot hall of famer that he go into the Hall wearing a D-Backs hat and not as a Yankee or Mariner. Whether he can coach or not doesn't matter. Many teams keep former players around just for show. Afterall, he may well be the greatest left handed pitcher of all time. I suggest everyone get past the personal stuff.
