Inside the Box for
September 9, 2011: Diamondbacks 3, Padres
2
The Good:
Manager Kirk Gibson picked a good night to start Lyle Overbay at first base. Overbay drove in the go-ahead run in the 8th inning with an RBI single. Overbay's last hit came on August 24th at Washington.
Also good for the D-backs offense…Justin Upton reached the 30 home run mark for the first time in his career. The solo shot in the 6th inning gave Upton a home run in each of his last three games. Upton's home run also made him just the third player in the Major Leagues this season to reach 30 homers with at least 20 steals.
As for the pitching…starter Daniel Hudson threw his third complete game of the season and allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts.
The D-backs are now winners of 15 of 17 overall and matched Cleveland for the longest home winning streak this season with 14.
More Good:
The Giants and the Brewers both lost tonight. That's good news for the Diamondbacks. They increase their lead over San Francisco in the NL West and they continue to gain on Milwaukee for home field advantage in the post-season.
The Funky:
Diamondbacks wearing their purple throw-back uniforms at Chase Field. It was a blast from the past to see the old colors and style.
