Soccer is the most popular sport in the world by far, but FIFA should change the rules so that Americans like it more? Uh, I hate to tell you, but soccer isn't struggling for popularity.
Doug, as much as I think your suggestions would help in the United States, isn't it selfish to consider that FIFA would want to make changes just to make the USA happy? The terms are what make soccer special. It’s the number one youth sport in the country. Look at attendance of Sounders games in Seattle. I might suggest Americans aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate the complexity & strategy of soccer. So, don’t change the game, change the biased officiating; that’s what the problem is, fake injuries and all. I love soccer too. I say leave soccer alone & have FIFA reform officiating.
The beautiful game is far more popular worldwide than any sport. We in America fail to embrace it because we like things simple. We want high scoring, and easy to follow rules. That is why hockey is not popular- hard rules to follow. Baseball- hit ball, score run. Football- run or pass score TD, basketball- ball in hoop. We fail to grasp difficult sports or sports that don't feature lots of scoring.
I like our game being private and not popular in the states. Americans need to learn the rules and appreciate the game-- or dont. Either way it will thrive without us.

It's FIFA? It's the US fans? It's the officiating? It's a boring game!!! that's what's wrong with it. It's slow, boring (did I already say boring?) and it's a Euro sport. Countries that like soccer like it cuz otherwise they have to go home to their mudhuts and eat bugs. The sport is filled with Manu Ginobili's that roll around on the ground like they've been shot by a hi-powered rifle when they got tripped. WHO CARES!!!! It's soccer for God's sake. It's not a sport unless they fans and players know when the end of the game is.
