Everyone I've talked to who knows Shane Doan always says what a great guy he is. He's the example that all athletes should aspire to. I think he has been the glue to help keep this team solid through all this mess. Now if only the rest of the professional sports world would try to be more like him.
I've had the luck to meet Shane Doan twice. Both times, he has been gracious and friendly, and he took the time to make my kids feel like they were truly important to him. He always goes above and beyond what is expected, and he's truly the face of the team. I wish him luck in the playoffs, and I'm proud to be following a team that he captains.
Shane is a great guy and a great ambassador for the Phoenix metro area.
Btw, thanks for waking up to the Coyotes finally, Doug. God forbid you cut out some time from the Suns and actually talk about the Coyotes. It's not just you it's a PHX-wide media problem.
First off, Doan is great and l enjoy watching him play, but he isn't even the greatest captain to wear the #19. Steve Yzerman turned Detroit into Hockeytown and inspired a city desperately in need of something great. Yzerman would never face wash a guy with a cut face (like Doan did to Franzen after boarding him), he would have set up a goal instead. Great captains lead by example on and off the ice, and despite a wrecked knee, Yzerman led 3 teams to a cup. Doan was unable to finish one of his only 2 playoff series in the past decade. Calling it like it is.
I own a Shane Doan jersey. I have a handful of his hockey cards, and don't own a single one for another player. Shane Doan is an excellent captain, and possibly even a better human being, but he's not the greatest captain in NHL history.
And for the Red Wings fan, we get it. Steve Yzerman walks on water. He beats up Chuck Norris on a regular basis. He knits wool caps for the homeless in Detroit.
