Lots of QBs are squimish in the pocket early in their careers. Starbach, Montana, Eli Manning, etc.
They learned to settle down over time. Fix the Oline or call plays that give the QB more time/confidence and you'll fix the problem.
Is really better to stand in the pocket and throw an INT or overthrow the receiver by 10 yards?
This notion is just plain silly.
I would be scared when I look down the line and see Levi Brown and 52 year old Jeremy Bridges at tackle. Bobby Massie needs to learn the schemes and fast because he is a monster.
And he does have a valid quest "is (it) really better to stand in the pocket and throw a INT and/or overthrow the receiver by 10 yards?" My answer is half yes and half no. My half yes answer: Once Skelton masters the pocket presence, he'll have time to make a sound decision, set his feet, and have time to make a accurate throw. Kurt Warner for example, didnt have time to be poised in the pocket. The O Line sucked so bad that he had to release it quick. But Warner is a HOF'er. Kolb or Skelton dont even have the priveledge of having their names mentioned in the same sentence with Hall of Fame.
Warner also played with the greatest show on Turf. Marshall Faulk is a HOF RB and was the best RB in the NFL during his playing days in STL. He had 2 pro bowl recievers in Bruce and Holt. He comes to AZ, has 3 Pro Bowl WRs (Fitz, Q, and Breaston) and makes the SB. To Bugsby's point, having a QB, with only pocket presence, doesnt help this team. But what Wolf is saying, correct me if Im wrong, is if we have a QB that has pocket presense, eventually, the other intagibles will improve, eventually... Bugsby and I, are still waiting to see that improvement.
What a great article. I agree 100%. Kolb does not have that pocket poise. He panics too early and runs out of the pocket. I hope that Kolb does well on Friday, but my prediction is that we will see the same 'ol Kolb and be disappointed. I want to see the Cardinals do well this season, but without a good QB we will be in trouble!
