DeWayne Russell leads Grand Canyon to win in conference opener

DeWayne Russell had 24 points and eight assists to lead Grand Canyon to a 73-65 home win over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday in the WAC opener for both teams.

Russell shot 8-of-10 from the field to lead GCU (10-8, 1-0 WAC) to the victory. Daniel Alexander also went 8-for-10 from the floor, scoring 19 points and adding nine rebounds off the bench for the Antelopes.

CSU Bakersfield (4-12, 0-1) was limited to 43.8 percent field-goal shooting, while Grand Canyon shot 52.2 percent, including 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from 3-point range.
