The Suns’ second unit wouldn’t let the starters back on the floor Thursday against the Charlotte Hornets.
A group of Tyler Ulis, Leandro Barbosa, Jared Dudley, Derrick Jones Jr. and Alan Williams finished off the struggling Eastern Conference foe, and it had a lot to do with a defensive effort in the final period that held Charlotte to 12 points.
Many of those Hornets turnovers and missed shots turned into opportunity for Phoenix in the Suns’ 120-103 victory at Talking Stick Resort Arena.
And in transition is where Ulis twice initiated spectacular dunks by Jones, the 20-year-old rookie forward who has spent most of his time in the D-League this season.
Early in the fourth quarter with the Suns holding a 96-95 edge, Ulis connected with Jones on a halfcourt pass.
Later on, with Phoenix pulling away, a turnover on a play in which Hornets forward Frank Kaminsky was injured triggered another fastbreak. Jones caught the Ulis pass streaking down the left wing and flushed a one-handed jam.

Ulis closed with eight points, eight assists and two steals, while Jones Jr. scored eight more to go with two steals and two blocks.
Williams, meanwhile, continued his hot streak, scoring 16 points to go with a team-high 12 rebounds.
