Pro tip: How to order a Churro Dog

Chase Field, much like most ballparks across America, has become known for extravagant food choices that you can stuff your face with on any given night.

And amongst those food choices, one dessert item has emerged to become synonymous with this Arizona Diamondbacks team: the iconic Churro Dog.

This culinary creation, which was designed in-house two years ago, consists of a churro resting lovingly inside of an iced long john doughnut covered with vanilla frozen yogurt, caramel and chocolate sauces, and whipped cream.

The Churro Dog became a huge story on social media upon its creation in 2015. It has since become a food staple of Chase Field and a legend in the ballpark snacking game. It has even branched off to include different variations of the original.

I have had the opportunity myself to eat the Churro Dog on more than one occasion. In fact, I ate three of them. At once. In one night. In under ten minutes. It was a terrible idea.

The Churro Dog is an anomaly based on the components that make it what it is. You may have had one yourself and walked away with a less-than-stellar opinion of the dessert, and I am going to tell you why.

The idea of this dish, while good natured at its core, has one fatal flaw…churros and frozen yogurt do not get along. Churros are meant to be eaten hot when they’re a wonderful combination of crispy and soft, but when cooled at a rapid rate they completely change in consistency, becoming rock hard.

Mix this with the fact that the piping hot star of your dessert is melting the vanilla frozen yogurt on top of it while you rush to make it back to your seat and chances are you will be left with a soupy sweet mess before you’re halfway done. Simply put, these two ingredients together are basically the binary liquid bomb from “Die Hard with a Vengeance.”

So what’s the answer? Much like figuring out the key to eating a huge slice of NYC pizza is folding it and draining the grease, there is a trick to ordering the Churro Dog that you may not want to hear, but here it is: You have to ask for the churro on the side.

I know…I know. I’m ruining the fun. I’m smacking the pole out of a kid’s hand who is fishing in a puddle, and I’m sorry. But that’s the way it is. The churro MUST remain separate from the rest of the ingredients until you’re ready to eat it.

I’m not saying that the churro can’t be dipped in the frozen yogurt or even placed back into the mix once you have arrived safely at your final destination. But the fact remains that, much like most things in life, this dessert has rules that must be followed to maintain order. You’ve been warned.
