The top of the first didn’t go quite as planned for Jered Weaver and the Padres, who allowed eight runs to the D-backs in the ballgame’s first half-inning.
It all started with a leadoff infield single by Gregor Blanco, who beat the shift. David Peralta popped up for the first out, and everything seemed to be normal.
Then, suddenly, there was nothing normal about the series-opener’s first frame.
Paul Goldschmidt walked, Jake Lamb yanked a three-run home run, Yasmany Tomas walked, Brandon Drury went yard, Chris Owings doubled, Jeff Mathis grounded out, Taijuan Walker singled — at which point the Padres changed pitchers to Miguel Diaz — Blanco walked, Peralta singled, Goldschmidt walked (again), Lamb walked with the bases loaded to score a run, and Tomas struck out.
In all, 14 hitters went to the plate, eight scoring on six hits. Seven of those runs were charged to Weaver, the other one to Diaz.
Weaver and Diaz combined to throw 67 pitches to get three outs, a frame that took 37 minutes to complete. Weaver entered the game with a 6.05 ERA, which has now ballooned to 7.44. He’s allowed 12 earned runs to the D-backs alone over two starts this season.
It’s not every day that a player can say they went 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs scored in the first inning, as Blanco did.
