Paul Goldschmidt signs reporter’s clipboard after striking it with foul ball Saturday

Jun 3, 2017, 2:10 PM

FOX Sports Florida’s Craig Minervini was lucky that he was paying attention to the play on the field Friday.

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hit a missile of a foul ball down the third base line towards Minervini. The video shows Goldschmidt’s unorthodox follow through of his swing, making sure no one was about to be seriously injured as he watched where the ball wound up. Turns out it was headed right for the reporter.

Instead of the cameras catching Minervini down on the ground in loads of pain after being struck by the ball, they instead showed his clipboard in his left hand being hit.

The dented clipboard saved Minervini and to honor the occasion, he had Goldschmidt sign the clipboard the next day.

Foul balls were doing damage everywhere at Marlins Park Friday. The fish tank behind home plate had its protective covering broken after a foul ball hit by J.T. Realmuto.
